Michel on 2021:
“2021 wasn’t the worst result for volume that I’ve had here – that was the minus-60% that we did in 2016! Still, it was minus-45% in 2021. If we add that to minus-25% in 2020 and minus-15% in 2019, you can see that we’ve ‘lost’ nearly a whole vintage in the last 3 years…”
Michel on 2020:
“I started harvesting the grapes for crémant on the 26th August, starting the 29th for the reds. 2019 and 2020 are two good vintages, very pinot but they are not the same.”
The wines…
Good to visit Michel after a couple of years absence. All the structural integrity that is the domaine style but with a clarity of proper Chambolle flavour too – here are some wines worth a special search!
2020 Bourgogne Chardonnay
Bottled. Started the fermentation in tank and finished it in barrel. From the commune of Chambolle, towards the railway line. Heavier soil but some gravels that help the minerality too.
Swirling in the glass slowly minimises a little barrel and gains some perfume – aromatically this is really very good.
2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Commune of Chambolle fruit blended with some from Gilly and Morey. Manual harvest, half barrel, half tank elevage.
Dark fresh fruit – deep – that’s a nice nose. Super shape and energy, fine flavour a little structure but you won’t have to wait too long. Super.
2020 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits
From Concoeur above Vosne, nearly 60-year-old vines with a limestone soil. All manual harvest, 25% new barrel elevage.
Tons of colour. The fruit is dark and less forward. Hmm, super shape and texture, dark, juicy fruit. That’s delightful stuff!
2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Dessus les Vermots
2014 the first vintage.
Depth, an airiness but clearly not so open. Broad, fresh, good intensity, faint bitters. That’s a wine that’s in great shape – again!
2020 Nuits St.Georges Les Charmois
From Les Charmois – 45-year-old vines in a slightly colder area so harvested late like HCDN, ‘It’s not windy but it’s cool here.’
A narrow nose but pretty. Wide, not grainy textured, lovely fruit energy and freshness this is excellent!
2020 Chambolle-Musigny
Around 8 different parcels.
Dark fruit but again blending energy and purity – very nice. A little extra depth and concentration, purity of floral fruit – Chambolleness – this is cliché beautiful Chambolle – super!
From Les Fremiers and mainly 85-year-old vines – selecting some for a massale selections. 0.70 hectares
Narrower, more serious. Wider, more concentraion, finer tannin, super texture. Potentially great!
2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Gruenchers
Vines from 1986
Not fully open but certainly a more accessible width of perfume here. Super texture again, so mouth-watering, a cascade of fruit and minerals. Very long…
78-year-old vines
A more forward nose, more depth too. It reminds of the VV but with more fruit. Wide, juicy, fluid – yes! Waves of fruit and minerals – vibrant almost. Yes – Bravo!
2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Gruenchers
A little less colour. The nose is deeper with a faint roast accent to the fruit flavour. Hmm here is a perfumed depth, a generosity – less calm vs the 20.
