1997 Potel Nicolas Volnay
Quite deeply coloured ruby-red and starting to gain a shade of amber at the rim. Wide, slightly ethereal aromatics with a submerged but dense core of darker fruit – very interesting. The full palate shows plenty of fine background tannin that’s edged with a little bitterness. There’s just enough acidity… Read in the Note Finder
nicolas potel 1997 volnay
My last Potel (99 Volnay 1er Mitans) was horribly corked so it would be hard not to improve! Very highly rated by Perry Mason from barrel, this is a wine that has been sullen virtually since release – every couple of years I pull one… Read More
bootcamps and travel
I start 8 days of travel today – Holland: mainly Dutch Siberia (Friesland) with a weekend in Amsterdam – if I’m in your environs (during the week) drop me a line at the usual place. I expect only a smattering of posts in that time. I don’t really… Read More
Roundup of Wines Tasted
No slurping or spitting! This is a compendium of wines that, in the main, were really drunk with food, friends and family between August and November 2007. There main exception in these pages are about 60 2005’s which were tasted at a large gathering in Zürich in November. Only… Read More

seven 97 volnays – not all are magnificent
This was not a bad group of wines, but was frankly dominated by the quality of the Lafon which I would unhesitatingly recommend. It was from a magnum, but then so were many others, so no advantage there. 1997 Camille Giroud, Volnay 1er Carelles It’s… Read More
