Romain on 2020:
“2020 was a deception! In the growing season we saw lots of grapes on the vines but in the end not much juice was produced. The volume for the whites was okay, but it was a year with 25-30% lower volume than the average.”
Romain on 2019:
“In 2019 we also lost some volume, that was down to 3 factors; a little spring frost, clearly not so good flowering conditions and again was hot & dry – with 40°C many grapes grilled by the sun. We have moved to collecting our harvest in smaller cases and using a vibrating table for triage – I think these things made a big difference. In the end, about 20-25% lower volume, not something dramatic and the quality is there. I’m planning March or April for bottling – I’m happy to take my time, though they are so open now I might start with a couple of wines earlier than that.”
The wines…
Every time I taste with Romain I have the same impression – the sheer drinkability of his wines – they are simply delicious!
2019 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Almost all in the commune of Volnay but there’s a little from Pommard and Meursault too. A little young vines are included, but the average is still over 60 years old
Not such a deep colour. Airy, fresh, floral – that’s a nice perfume. Fine texture and good attack – juicy flavour here. A little structure in the middle but modest. That’s delicious and shows a fine energy. Very faintly with finishing bitters.
2019 Volnay
About 10 parcels assembled from all around the village – high and low
Ooh – vibrantly fruited – that’s a great nose! Wide, extra energy again – depth of flavour here. Penetrating flavour, but no pain here, only gain. That’s a lovely wine again.
Vaumuriens, Chanlins and Riottes. The Vaumuriens may be pulled out this year – ‘they are 80-year-old vines that deliver lovely grapes but not enough.’ This wine made from only 27 hl/ha
That’s a big deep nose, some oak in the mix here too. Mouth-filling, silky, that’s a wine with a lovely presence – the oak is there but never too loud. Perfectly formed and again delicious… Great Villages
The vines are sited behind the big red house that’s on your left-hand side before the old Chapelle – direction Meursault..
More airy, more vibration to this pretty red fruit. Extra – it’s wide but the depth of fruit complexity is all Volnay – completely delicious, slightly floral perfumed. Bravo!
2019 Bourgogne Blanc
5-year-old vines in the commune of Volnay – Les Grandes Terres
Vibrant nose, not much sulfur so far is my impression – golden-citrus-fruited. Nice drive and a lovely texture. A little smoky impression from the barrel – this currently in tank. Will make more than a fine aperitif – the finish is very impressive.
