Hugues on 2020:
2020 had a lot of satisfaction and promise right up to mid-July though afterwards the weeks of heatwave impacted the harvest a lot. Certainly, we had a good maturity but we lost a lot – practically 40% – about 25 hl/ha was the average result. Fine grapes that were high in sugar though we’re getting more and more experience with that and the wines look good in barrel.

Hugues on 2019:
A little more yield but still not to quite enough make us cheer! We were closer to 30 hl/ha but I can’t say was a difficult season – those are the wet ones. We didn’t have frost – not since 2016. Our harvest started about 11 September – which, compared to 2020, gave us more time to prepare so relatively more comfortable for harvesting. All the wines are now in tank. They are wines which I think merit a little more elevage so I’m not planning to bottle just yet. Plus I can wait until the stock of 2018s is a little lower.

The wines…

A great range, all are different. All have, more-or-less, crunchy fruit and generally accessibility too. The freshness keeps bringing you back…

2019 Chorey-lès-Beaune Les Beaumonts
A grape purchase here
That’s a lovely width of fruit – very pretty strawberry notes here – quite rare in Burgundy. This has a nice shape in the mouth – concentration but never tending to heaviness. That’s a very finely wrought and very nicely finishing Chorey!

2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune
About 15 different parcels assembled here. The domaine has nearly 5 hectares of Savigny villages in red and a little over 1 hectare in white.
Darker fruit but still with some attractive higher aromas. Here an extra vibration of energy and some structural impression too – it’s a nice combination. Almost juicy and clean the fruit in finish with just a nice amount of structural rigour – I like!

2019 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Belles Filles
Another contract, this the first vintage.
A slightly steely, reductive red fruit – classic Pernand. Fresh, good drive and energy. Very open, good clarity and really mouth-watering in the finish. Almost chewy depth of finishing flavour – another great contract wine!

2019 Volnay
Another contract.
Yes, a different style – more silken aroma, suggesting flowers too. Mouth-filling, quite a structural wine, but the flavour is again fine and mouth-watering. More vibration to the wide finishing flavour. Another fine finish – more elegant this time.

2019 Aloxe-Corton
More depth of aroma here – a faint accent of creamy oak too. Extra width, extra intensity and tannin too – though with no grain, just a little dryness. The finish slowly mouth-watering as the flavour leaches through the ripe structure. This you should wait for, but not too long!

2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Les Peuillets
A super combination of depth and freshness to this nose – there’s energy here. Supple, wide, finely intense but never starkly so. The fruit red and mouth-watering with lots of elegance compared to the previous wines – this is excellent – a finishing tannin as an anecdote!

2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Les Serpentières
More airy and floral – a very attractive nose. Direct, fine texture, juicy fruit – the most so far – really mouth-watering and delicious. Waves of bright finishing flavour – bravo!

I’ve been using 15-25% whole-clusters to bring the more crunchy fruit characteristic, the Serpentières, for example, used 20%…

2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Les Lavières
A deeper nose, broader fruit at its base. Supple, layered flavour but still a palate with freshness and energy. Mouth-watering like all here. Broad in the finish too – long but less energetic vs the Serpentières – a fine and classic Lavières

2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Les Guettes
A nose that’s almost a combination of the last two wines; really a nice width of cushioned red fruit. Extra ripeness of fruit too, plenty of tannin framing the flavour. Larger scaled denser flavour not a wine for elegance right now but still a very tasty mouthful of wine. Super.

2019 Beaune 1er Bressandes
A much broader nose – higher-toned fruit but no flowers. Nice attack at the start – a width, much cooler-fruited. There is structure but none of the dryness of tannin that some here show today. Wide, wide waves of finishing flavour here with some floral element – that’s a young but very delicious finish.

2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Les Gravains
A nose that’s broad at the base, but a little compact higher up. Bubbling with energy, the tannin a little more visible than in the Bressandes but this wine is more about its energy and a lovely mouth-watering style to the flavour. Broad, with a little ripe tannin in the finish. To wait for a while but here the flavour is delicious.

2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Les Dominode
Not the largest nose, but as befits its position in this tasting, the most complete nose – floral, round, airy but still with an inner density – that’s a very fine invitation. Fine mouth-filling, mouth-watering, scale to the flavour. Nearly juicy and certainly quite mouth-watering. There’s plenty of tannin but no grain and very little dryness either. Holding a broad and persistent finish – a very tasty one too – clearly place #1 here – Bravo!

Les Blancs
None are bottled yet – the machine is being repaired – but they are planning to bottle by the end of the year.

2019 Bourgogne Chardonnay
Negoce, must purchases from the Mâconnais
A nice core of ripe but fresh fruit – automatically attractive. Some richness of flavour but perfectly balanced with a width of freshly mineral energy. That’s a very easy but also very attractive Bourgogne – simply excellent.

2019 Chorel-lès-Beaune Clos Margot
Negoce, in grapes.
A little more fresh depth to the aroma – slightly stony in style. More direct and fresh – I wasn’t expecting that! The tannin of the vintage visible here. The finish is delicious. Fool your friends – delicious Chorey Blanc!

2019 Saint Romain La Perrière
Another contract
Wide – very wide, almost a touch of sherbet over modest citrus. But there’s a nice attack to this wine – mineral, citrus, mouth-watering. Still an overall ripe feeling for the village but completely delicious and very well balanced – it’s very good and finishes well with a touch of tannin again.

2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Blanc
A more vertical nose of high and low tones, not so wide. Energy, freshness – ebullient in nature. The structure suggests a little patience – 6 months will be a good start. Wide and delicious finishing again – always with the texture. Fine

2019 Pernand-Vergelesses
A contract wine
Despite a little oak, this is a very pretty nose of precise citrus fruit freshness. Here a little gas. But a mouthful of energy and open flavour awaits – almost juicy here. That’s very tasty with a classic reductive style to the Pernand fruit. A burst of finishing flavour. A bottle that would be finished too quickly! Excellent stuff.

2019 Corton Blanc
Few higher tones but this is deep with a stone-fruit – and then more stone – impression. Really wide, a vibrant energy here – effusive wine despite the considerable concentration. Deeply fruited, long – so long – finishing, as usual with a tactile touch of tannin to remember it by.
