Jean-Charles on 2019:
“The 2019 whites are not bad, but there’s much less red, due to the non-availability of grapes from my many contracts… All the whites were bottled during September. Of course, I have to mention the Puligny/Corpeau Saint-Vincent. Here I’m making, together with Leflaive, the wines for the Saint-Vincent. Leflaive are making the villages wine, and I’m making the Bourgognes.”
The wines…:
For whites in 2019, the house style of freshness and mouth-watering expression, not a hint of DIAM reduction in any. The reds are mainly clean, fresh, cool-fruited. All very dependable bottles ranging from very good to excellent quality.
All DIAM seals this year except a couple of reds. All bottled in September except for 2 red that were done in October.
2019 Bourgogne Aligoté
‘From old vines of 50 years-old from ‘Corpeau-Montrachet‘ – I think it’s great soil for Bourgogne’
That’s a nicely fresh nose, slightly citrus and inviting. Direct and fresh in the mouth too – faintly saline and beautifully elegantly finishing. A perfect aperitif…
2019 Bourgogne Chardonnay Les Louères
Near Puligny, almost a hectare
A pretty freshness and excellent clarity of aroma. Just a modest cushion to this texture but this is properly structured and has a mouth-watering finish. Not a bit facile – that will be a very good Bourgogne.
2019 Bourgogne Chardonnay Les Champs Huillier
This close to Chassagne
That’s a super citrus nose, a little lime – that’s lovely. More energy, more salinity – that’s an excellent glass – but be patient. Finishing nicely tannic.
2019 Rully
A more composed nose, nicely fresh. Extra minerality – fine freshness and shape to this wine – not overtly sweet – none are so far – lovely finishing too. Excellent wine once.
2019 Auxey-Duresses Les Hautées
Normally it’s a different climate (Les Ruchottes) here but was all frosted!
A more timid nose but still with clarity and freshness. Nice volume, lots of minerality at the base of this wine. Super middle intensity, slowly mouthwatering – another well-defined, complex and pure wine – Very good again.
2019 St.Romain
More intensity, that’s a lovely nose. Direct again – the style of the maison in this vintage, cool fruited, well-structured and mineral. So mouth-watering, wide and tasty.
2019 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Pins
A tighter nose again but nicely pure. Vibrant, fresh, mouth-watering. The finishing intensity is gorgeous – that’s a delicious finish!
2019 St.Aubin 1er Cru
From Sur Gamay and Frionnes – both small, so assembled.
Also, a nose that’s a little timid but with a purity of citrus fruit. More depth and density to the flavour here, essentially still the house style of freshness and mouth-watering expression – despite the faint tannin, not a bit phenolic. Chewy concentration in the finish – this is very, very good!
2019 Chassagne-Montrachet
A different nose – a width of aroma and a faint, perhaps, barrel spice. Width and concentration, an extra depth to the flavour complexity. Another lovely wine in this style.
2019 Puligny-Montrachet
One parcel
Higher toned, a harder mineral core is the impression. More mouth-filling dimension and energy. Lots of complexity in the finish, faintly saline, also very faintly textured with tannin at the end.
2019 Meursault Les Casse-Têtes
A smaller nose. Wide, intense, that’s a good complexity in the middle too – here in the finish is proper Meursault flavour. Long too. Very tasty!
2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Caillerets
Also, a compact nose to start. Nicely mouth-filling. A pretty complexity here – certainly behind many domaine wines, but the complexity is wide and delicious and the wine is very well balanced.
2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Morgeot
Compact starting. More attack, wider, layered, tons of energy – here is more obvious power today, properly ordered in the tasting. Slowly, faintly spiced in the finish.
Les Reds:
2019 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Les Meix Grapins
Plenty of colour. Plenty of aromatic impact here too – freshness and darker fruit. Direct, dark-fruited, ripe but still fresh, plenty of tannin – this is a wine with structure and for keeping a while.
2019 Auxey-Duresses Sur Melin
Freshness and drive from this nose but generally tight. Extra width and depth of flavour – that’s really a lovely wine – complex with fresh-fruit flavours. I find this excellent.
2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles-Vignes
Deeply coloured. Here’s a nose that’s more open, darkly but freshly fruited. Here is some concentration but not a bit dense – open, airy, structured – beautiful pure fruit at the core. Tannin but not too much – for the more patient among you but the base material in this proper Chassagne-Rouge is super…
2019 Santenay 1er Gravieres
A little more depth and suppleness to this nose – completed by good freshness. Much finer tannin, more saline – wide, mouth-watering. That’s a lovely finish too – slightly spiced.
2019 Aloxe-Corton
A deeper, more confiture fruit nose – the first like that. Driving, direct, so silky but with plenty of fruit too. There’s more freshness and red fruit in this flavour profile.
2019 Nuits St.Georges
From a good grower in Nuits, but only one barrel!
Lots of colour. That’s a deep and clean fruit, very attractive indeed. Clean, fresh, cool fruit – all in the style of the domaine – but also so concentrated and driving. Excellent wine and very much in the style of the maison’s other wines this year.
