Frederic was in full attack mode when I arrived – deep in the mechanics of his tractor – “The spring is arriving too fast and I’ve got to get into the ploughing…

Frédéric on 2019:
A good harvest, We didn’t have frost here and the wines are good. Some rain came in August and I’m pretty sure that helped save the vintage as it had been so dry before. My only worry, for now, is the US market as it’s quite important for me – I sold quite a lot there last year. People queue at the door for organic wine so I’ll be able to sell but it will be a shame for all the new relationships in the US.

Frédéric on 2018:
All was good and I sold a lot of wine in the US! Canada started well too. Victor has started in the Lycée Viticole too – it’s a good environment here. The heat was borderline but for the work in the vines, organic, it’s good for us. The fermentations were horrible though – so long – it was okay in 2019 fortunately. No catastrophe’s as you can see, but some stress.

The wines…

No visit last year due to a mix-up on my part, but I’m happy to report that wines that I appreciate so much are still in great shape.

As always the ‘standard’ range of wines wear the name of Frédéric for contract grapes, Des Ronze for the domaine wines, the ‘natural’ wines showing the name of Victor:

2019 Beaujolais Villages Rosé Frederic Sornin
Not yet bottled – will be done in March
A fresh and attractive nose. Vibrant and delicious – ooh – great gamay rosé can be the greatest – and here’s one today. Bravo!

2018 Domaine des Ronze Coeur de Regnie Bio
Traditional, destemmed, the cuvée that’s typical of the domaine
Plenty of colour. Starts a little reductive but opens up well in the glass. Supple, wide – lovely acidity and a growing intensity – slightly saline—really super depth of flavour. Delicious.

2018 Régnié Bio Nature Victor Sornin
The only added sulfur just before the bottling.
This has a lovely, quite pretty fruit – very elegant. An extra dimension of flavour, a little CO2, but wide, energetic and with a little herby extra finishing complexity. That’s a super finish. Lovely wine…

2019 Beaujolais Villages Blanc Domaine des Ronze
Also a tank sample – these vines are organic and in Lantignié. ‘I don’t do a lot of white, these vines on granite so not a traditional terroir but it brings a lot of minerality – I harvest early to avoid over-mature fruit.’ Also to be bottled in March.
A fresh, mineral, nose. Sits nicely on the palate, round plenty of freshness and plenty of salinity too. Supple, still a slightly hard minerality but the freshness balances that rather well – very drinkable.

Agree? Disagree? Anything you'd like to add?
