Louis-Clement on 2018:
A nice year, we had a lovely production including some new things which we can taste next year! A Beaujolais Villages 1.5 ha just near to Julienas, granitic and in conversion to organic. The vintage had earlier harvesting than 2017, and to be sure not too high degrees of ripeness too. Certainly a much better volume than in 2019 – here it was the cold weather that was to blame in the early season.

The wines…

Excellent to great wines – what more could you want?

2018 Beaujolais Villages
An equal mix of 2 parcels – not very close to each other. A very jazzy label too!
Deep, modestly reductive – the last drops in the glass are much more open. Nice shape in the mouth again – a leading edge of flavour that’s saline and fresh. And a line that goes deep in the finish – a wine that starts easy but asks many questions afterwards – that’s great BJV!

2018 Julienas Trois Verres
A new cuvée in 2016 – a graphic label, the three glasses – from a plantation done in 2014 and 2015 in Bottière
Ooh – deep but not reductive – dark fruit with the roundness of elevage. Layered, contemplative – but not a bit lacking in intensity – dark fruit here too, driving flavour. As always the faint salinity, almost minerality, adding to the drinkability – excellent wine.

2018 Julienas La Bottière Vieilles-Vignes
This is an old-vine cuvée – 70 years-old – the save vinification as 3 glasses, more structure and more core from the older vines. 30% elevage in barrels.
Here is a really interesting nose – going in multiple directions, dark fruit – really complex – could be due to the barrels but I don’t note them – only how good it is. Big, lots of energy here a wide and growing intensity – not quite a wall of flavour – but there’s lots – a mix of the silky and the drag of the tannin below – modestly accented with bitters – almost bitter chocolate and nicely long. That’s another simply excellent wine!

2017 Julienas Vayolette
From the west of the appellation on a plain south-facing, steep slope, the soil is bluestone. Have a 3ha parcel. ‘I adore this vintage I think it tendu and fin – I think the third winter has really put it in place. Zero added sulfur – I thought the wine was in a great place at the time of bottling so chose to leave it like that.’
That’s a lovely nose – not big but has some richness of aroma yet seems very silky too. That’s beautiful in the mouth too – a really beautifully flavoured intensity, growing width, incisive – beautifully structured great wine! So persistent too – faintly with tannin right at the end.
