1999 Clos de Tart Clos de Tart

By on November 30, 2006 #asides

Medium, medium-plus ruby-red core edging to a salmon pink. A nose of minerals edged with soft red fruit and the faintest trace of vanilla. The palate is wide but not fat, plenty of dry and grainy tannin and a real impression of expansion. Very long – again in a mineral rather than fruity sense. A young and impressive wine of quite some potential.

Deep ruby-red, this looks like a 2003. Unusual high-toned, estery aromatics. In the mouth this is much fresher than the Ambroise with a really strong floral dimension to the fruit – hard to believe that this is the same appellation as the other wines. I find it as impressive as I found it off-putting; To be honest I couldn’t drink this as the ‘gag-mechanism’ started working because I found it ‘too chemical’ – to be fair some people really liked this – not rated.

Deep ruby red. The nose first shows toasty, spicy oak, straight high tones and occasional glimpses a lovely penetrating red raspberry/redcurrant fruit. In the mouth this is fresh, with black edged ripe fruit, quite linear all the way into the finish accompanied by a slightly astringent, grainy tannin. Excellent.

(First bottle corked) Medium-plus ruby-red colour. The nose is quite deep, dark coloured fruit with only a faint suggestion of jamminess. The palate is completely jam-free; still plenty of slightly astringent tannin, good acidity and a reasonable density of (still) one-dimensional fruit. A nice-enough wine that despite it’s lowly appellation is still very much a youngster.

Medium-minus colour. A friendly and complex nose; faint, very understated smoky stems overlayed with mainly black cherry notes. The palate is very well balanced, good acidity and still quite linear, though ripe fruit. The tannins are understated, heading for the background, but still with a last edge of astringency. Overall a very interesting and understated wine where, today, most of the action comes from the lovely aromatics.

Medium red, still with a twist of cherry colour. The nose bounds from the glass, wide, quite high-toned and with a sweet cooked apple centre. Rather forward acidity that needs just a little helping density than is apparent. The flavour is found from the mid-palate onwards but mingles with slightly bitter tannin. Length is good, just a suggest of dried currants. Reading this note, I think I’ve made the wine sound less appealing than in reality it was, but overall it seems to need a little more density to balance the structure – perhaps it has already peaked(?)

1999 Tollot-Beaut Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières

(From magnum) A deep core of colour that’s just holding onto the last trace of cherry-red. Aromaticly this is both wide and deep – the high notes are a little floral and the depth is of red jam tarts. The palate has good density yet somehow remains rather compact. The texture has just an edge of fat and plenty of tannin though it’s quite fine for a Savigny. The fruit is black-edged and really does hang-on very well in the finish. Certainly young, but lots of potential – everyone enjoyed this wine – three more were ordered for the cellar but they had sold out!

Medium-plus ruby red. The nose is about primary black-edged fruit and a strong spicy/cedar and mineral component – eventually you can get at a tight core of red currant/berry fruit plus a little cooked meat. The palate is still quite linear with a concentrated but mineral showing and plenty of slightly grainy but ripe tannin. Good acidity, the finish doesn’t seem amazingly long, but this is a very primary showing – good if rather brawny stuff – no need to recheck for another 5 years.
