1999 Gros Frère & Soeur Richebourg

Medium-plus ruby-red colour, still with hints of cherry. Shiny red fruit on the nose with a black undertow and a little earth, eventually a little orange too. Sweet and concentrated with real mid-palate intensity. Soft entry, well covered tannin with a slowly fading good length that maybe even has a hint of licorice. Rather like de Vogüé’s 01 Musigny this displays apparently less ripe tannin when compared to others in its flight.

Medium, medium-plus ruby-red colour. The nose is very high toned, just a little metallic and is faintly red in tone – over 90 minutes there is little more showing. A little sweetness, rather linear and some intensity too. The acidity is mouth-watering and the length almost good. Linear and giving little today – but many villages and 1er cru wines from 1999 are showing in quite a similar way right now. Seems an okay wine but one that’s best left in the cellar for at least a couple more years. Day two this has much more depth and interest – confirming that it’s time to leave in the cellar.

1999 Vougeraie Vougeot Clos de la Prieuré Rouge

By on March 31, 2007 #asides

Deep nose. A trace of reduction is insifficient to hide the width and depth of the fruit – more mature notes on display with this wine. This is quite powerful wine, held in-line with good acidity, faintly grainy tannin and a good length. Despite the secondary notes on the nose this is still very-much a young wine.

1999 l'Arlot Nuits St.Georges Clos des Fôrets St.Georges

Medium-minus colour. A friendly and complex nose; faint, very understated smoky stems overlayed with mainly black cherry notes. The palate is very well balanced, good acidity and still quite linear, though ripe fruit. The tannins are understated, heading for the background, but still with a last edge of astringency. Overall a very interesting and understated wine where, today, most of the action comes from the lovely aromatics.

1999 Clerget Christian Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes

(From magnum) Medium-plus ruby-red colour. The nose starts very-much in a coffee/mocha vein, but bit-by-bit plums ever-more depth. Time takes the nose into a lovely core of tight, focused red fruit that eventually widens to give a redcurrant aspect – always my favourite. This has depth, intensity and an obvious extra level of tannin vs the older wines. A lovely wine.

1999 Esmonin Sylvie Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.Jacques

By on November 30, 2006 #asides

(From magnum) Medium ruby-red colour. It’s a wide and mineral nose with an almost corky element. With time the corky element takes over – I never found it on the palate though – still, a shame.

1999 Gay Michel Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Serpentières

By on November 30, 2006 #asides

Medium-plus ruby-red. The nose is forward and deep but to my taste unfortunately pruney – though there is a core of red fruit. The wine is concentrated and well textured – there’s plenty of wine here, ripe and sweet but again there’s that rather blocky, pruney element in the mid-palate, some raisin too. As said, there’s a lot of wine here, unfortunately I don’t like it very much…

1999 Bouchard Père et Fils Pommard

By on November 30, 2006 #asides

Medium-plus ruby-red. The nose is wide with a black tinge to the fruit and the beginings of a savoury note at its base – the fruit slowly comes more to the fore, becoming sweeter and fresher. In the mouth the fruit is also rather black and has a really nice purity on the mid-palate. This fruit is currently a little over-shadowed by the grainy, slightly astringent and certainly a little rustic tannin – which I feel could be a little riper. Very good persistence for a village. In terms of the complete package, this is a relative bargain in this vintage – still very young.

1999 Ambroise Bertrand Pommard La Refène

By on November 30, 2006 #asides

Medium, medium-plus ruby red with just a little amber at the rim. The nose is spicy from oak that for a while hides the estery-edged fruit. The nose never really improves, remaining relatively diffuse and never bringing any components into focus. The palate is much more interesting; well-covered tannins, warm and ripe red fruit, complex with a medium-plus intensity finish. Let-down by the nose, but good in parts.
