Morgan on 2022:
2022 was a good volume and I’m also happy with the quality. The malos took their time though – that said, our cellar was cool so maybe that played a role. We had three new cuvées in this vintage – vines from Pauline in St.Romain and Auxey-Duresses.
Morgan on 2021:
“2022 was much more generous but we were relatively okay, there wasn’t actually that much frost in our village, which coupled with our later pruning meant that we were not so badly touched. Harvesting was between 26 September to 01 October – but it wasn’t easy to get the full maturity in this vintage. We stayed with the infusion style of vinification but obviously, this took quite a lot longer than in 2020 – which, here, brought a similar volume, it wasn’t much more in 2019 either. Almost all was destemmed – just a couple of cuvées with about 20% were included.”
The wines…
Some of the wines had quite strained, almost cooked fruit aromas – but all were delicious and very drinkable. Good wines in 2021!
Trescasses version of DIAM used here:
2021 Côteaux Bourguignone
About half gamay – this on cordon in a deep and clay-y soil.
Lots of colour. Fresh, darker fruit, almost a little caramel ripeness. Even nicer flavour than the nose – mouth-filling, structured but mainly hidden structure. Finishing well. That’s a fine mouthful of wine – yum!
2021 Bourgogne Fleur du Pinot
This is their no-sulfur cuvée – with barrel elevage.
A dark, almost meaty fruit nose. Broad, full of energy, a juicy wine – and with super texture too – quite a spicy and concentrated wine but balanced by its juiciness. Again very tasty.
2021 Bourgogne Les Clusere
0.27 ha – The vines neighbouring the Clos des Grandes Vignes Nuits 1er of Comte Liger-Belair. Higher training here – and they are adapting the whole of the domaine to this
The nose of darker fruit like the others – a but grilled and slightly rustic – yet also still inviting. In the mouth this is lovely – there’s depth, energy and a width to these flavours – the oak is present but not destabilising. Hmm – I like that a lot – it’s simply excellent.
2021 Bourgogne Les Chaillots Vieilles-Vignes
Largest cuvée of the domaine – from the ‘wrong side’ of the RN but the right side of the train tracks in Premeaux – the cone de dejection of Vallerots…
Slightly redder and more direct aromas – my favourite so far. Mouth-filling but with good fluidity – there’s concentration but it’s never heavy. The oak slightly less visible. Give me the nose of this and the flavours of the last for a properly great Bourgogne. That’s a very nice finish though – delicious wine!
2021 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits La Montagne
Above Premeaux at 330 metres – ‘it’s all limestone here.’
Dark but clean fruit – that’s very attractive – becoming quite floral too. ‘It was quite reductive at the start – but this parcel is like that every year’
A width of energy here – a slightly chalky texture to the tannin. Juicy, lovely middle and finishing flavour – this is super!
2021 Côte de Nuits Villages
3 different, small, parcels – all in Comblanchien: Dominode, Au Cas, Les Loges.
A little reduction that sticks for a while. Good shape and energy in the mouth – the creaminess of the barrel is marked, licorice too – though maybe that’s the reduction – but it’s still a delicious combination. Carafe today – and enjoy…
2021 Côte de Nuits Villages La Bonnemaines
Also in Comblanchien
A broad nose that’s also dark and vibrant but not my favourite style. This is super in the mouth though, volume, a wine that flexes its muscles too – delicious and only modestly redolent of the nose – I’d carafe this again to finesse the nose a little…
2021 Nuits St.Georges Vieille-Vignes
Charbonniers plus Taupons – together 0.45 ha – one part of Charbonniers almost 100 years old, the Taupons about 70… It was here where they first tried the higher training
Again a darker slightly forced nose – but more attractive than the previous. That’s lovely in the mouth again – sinuous, texturally of velvet and tasty – carafe again but this is lovely!
A range of 4 contract wines:
2021 Chambolle-Musigny
Two parcels; Drazées and a little from Herbues
More red fruit, less power but good and open aromas. This is another lovely wine in the mouth – mobile, accented with a tasty barrel cream. Broad and lingering in the finish – very tasty
2 parcels – Clos Solon and Bas de Chenevery – roughly equal.
Hmm – more direct and airy – this is the loveliest nose so far – red fruit and becoming perfumed too. Vibrant, mouth-watering energy. Juicy complex – I can imagine somebody buying wine only since 2015 might struggle to understand it – but this is a top villages – so delicious!
2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées
‘Deeper clays here on the other side of the RN’
Back a little to the slightly grilled aromas – redder than the domaine wines still. Large-scale and lots of freshness. There’s a juicy, red-fruited, quality to these flavours, almost red-currant – finishing and slightly chalky tannin in the finish.
2021 Pommard 1er Les Bertins
This one is organic – 3 barrels worth from a large 2ha parcel.
Hmm – a redder style of fruit and with a textural depth – this is very attractive indeed. Great shape and mobility of flavour in the mouth. A little tannin in the finish but practically without a grain. Slight caramel in these finishing flavours – that’s a delicious and attractively complex wine.
Les Whites:
2021 Bourgogne Aligote
2 parcels – one in Premeaux below Vignottes and another next to the cemetery of Premeaux
A broad and vibrant, slightly metallic impression to this aroma. In the mouth, it’s cushioned and has plenty of sweetness. Becoming almost exotic in the middle and finishing flavours – ‘peach skin too’ – yes I see that.
2021 Bourgogne Aligoté Baies
This with 7 months of skin contact – done also in 2020 – in a stainless steel barrel.
Darker colour – airy aromatics – attractive herbs too. Broad, nicely incisive – still a suggestion of the exotic – more tannin – a chalkiness too – hmm – I may like this a little more – there’s certainly a more generous depth to this flavour.
2021 Bourgogne Pinot Blanc
The upper part of the previous parcel is planted in pinot blanc…
Barrel elevage. The nose is quite herby to start but with an engaging width. Hmm – a slightly metallic style but juicy and complex – ripe and fresh at the same time – I like this – very good.
2021 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Chardonnay La Montagne
This took almost a year to finish its sugars – it has a darker colour though – like the skin-contact aligoté.
That’s a lovely invitation – a darker vibrancy of aroma – suggesting a little reduction. Yes – lovely – a vibrant wine in the flavour too – not quite butterscotch but going in that direction. Delicious!
