Remi on 2022 & 2021:
I’m very happy with 2022 – we had wine in a proper quantity everywhere – we haven’t seen red yields like this since 2018 and it’s the first time in the domaine’s history that I made the full rendement in my Corton-Charlemagne – 13.5 barrels – compare that to the 1.5 barrels in 2021! In 2021 I also lost 45% of my reds too. I’m selling a little Charlemagne at, for me, a prohibitive price but some will still pay – but my Pernand yield was so small I can’t sell – what can I do with just half a barrel? At least there will be wine in 2022.

“All the 2021 bottlings are done – I usually do them in two campaigns – the 5 cuvées – but the white Pernand was only in a topping-up tank – I could do everything at once, so I did it in mid-March.

The wines…

These are the most classy, delicious and pure wines that I’ve tasted at this domaine. There are hardly any bottles of 2021 but don’t worry – the 2022s are also super.

2022 Pernand-Vergelesses
From barrel…
That’s a large scale – nose – of interest and fine Pernand reducto-minerality. Supple and generous but with a lovely finishing line with a super sizzle of energy – I’d like it a bit more incisive but this finishes with distinction – it’s also delicious. The finish is top-level for a villages…

2022 Corton-Charlemagne
Of course, also from barrel
A tighter but more direct nose. In the mouth also with impressive direction and silky smooth texture too – there’s concentration here and some proper finishing fireworks – a grand cru finish – I think this will end up as a very impressive wine – let the last gram of sugar ferment – some of the barrels still have 4g more…

2021 Pernand-Vergelesses
Not a commercial wine – ‘there’s not enough to share out’ – the first time Remi has tasted it since bottling…
Some sense of direction and a very pure and attractive perfume. A little richness for a 21 – but the flavour broadens over the palate and melts beautifully – this is simply excellent wine – practically great for a villages – bravo!

2021 Corton-Charlemagne
A less depth of aroma but a breadth of pure perfume – that’s a great invitation. Sinuous, a subtle richness but direct – a wine of clarity – of course intensity too – growing with a small accent of salinity. Sustaining a great finish – properly grand cru – very faint almost zesty bitters here – so long – simply a super GC!

Les Rouges:

2022 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er En Carradeux
Just finished it’s malo in the last two weeks – from barrel
A cushion of pure, darker red fruit – this was previously quite reductive but today hardly so – a minute in the glass and the perfume is wonderful. A suggestion of reduction but here is a nice structural and mineral wine with a balancing depth of texture – a generosity. The silkiness has just a suggestion of ripe tannic grain. The perfume returning in the finish – that’s just toooo good!

The malos for the grand cru reds were done in December for the Corton and January for the RSV:

2022 Corton-Bressandes
This nose is very aromatic and not a bit overdone – becoming more and more perfumed with air. Large in scale but with a certain roundness too – properly concentrated and faintly of chocolate in the broad finishing flavours – like the GC whites – very long too, lasting well on a small finishing bitter – dark chocolate bitters.

2022 Romanée St.Vivant
Starting with a faint volatile – but as it lifts we see a beautiful, almost vibrantly pure more floral than fruit perfume – that’s a beauty. Holding centre-stage in the mouth. And then a broad road of flavour that goes through the middle and hardly stops in the finish. There’s a hint more comfort in the Bressandes today but a little more complexity in this. Simply super wine…

2021 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er En Carradeux
Also tasted by Remi for the first time since bottling…
Less colour than the 22s. A lovely transparency to this width of red fruit – clarity! Ultra-delicious, juicy, complex – boiled sweets – persistent with a faintly chalky finish. I love it!

2021 Corton-Bressandes
Opened 24 hours (in cool cellar with inert gas topping)
This nose is more reticent than the previous but the purity is on the same hyper-attractive level. More structural but no hard edges – it’s just the architecture. Broad, pure, only a chalky accent of tannin – already deliciously approachable. Super!

2021 Romanée St.Vivant
This nose is so like that of the 22 with a first impression of slightly volatile florals and then a beautifully pure perfume – so good! Also like the 22 a little more direct and structural versus the Corton but more complex and more for waiting. I’d definitely drink the Bressandes before this – both are approachable but wait about 5 years and see how it’s going.
