Today was a chance to meet Camille, who has been working at the domaine since 2022 and who will eventually succeed her father in running the domaine. They even kindly invited me to lunch!
Bénigne on the 2021 and 2022 vintages:
We have 70% lower volume – fortunately a full vintage in 2022 followed and that was the first for a very long time! Historically, the elevage here has been very long but we have a little shorter these days – that said, the 21 had eighteen months of elevage and maybe the 2022 will go back to 24 – but we we will see. The challenge in 2022 was not to have too much concentration, or too much extraction.
The wines…
The 2021 white was a beauty and is worth a special search – the others are excellent for Fixin – or the historical impression of the worth of Fixin! The team brought a 2016 with them for the lunch – if you find it, buy it – it was a beauty – more time had given this the impression of a complete wine!
2022 Fixin 1er Clos de la Perrière
Still in elevage
Some obvious aromatic impact and concentration here – faintly volatile notes but nothing to worry about at this stage – becoming ever cleaner in the glass. Supple, very nice concentration and a velvet texture – really some finishing depth and an almost chocolatey length to this flavour.
2021 Fixin 1er Clos de la Perrière
Bottled in April.
Still plenty of colour. Hmm – a very perfumed nose – and with plenty of weight too. That’s really very good in the mouth – starting silky but with a tannin that slowly comes to the surface – more velvet. The finish still with a faint tannin but a lovely width. Excellent Fixin and a wine with a great finish…
2020 Fixin 1er Clos de la Perrière
A large nose – of both depth and concentration – some gentian impression here. Mouth-filling, a tannin that sticks to the gums but no grain – really broad finishing less impressively long than the 2021 today. A very good wine but today it is the 2021 that I much prefer…
And the white:
30% of the normal volume.
Here’s a nice width of aroma, slightly grained complexity – growing with a nice perfume. Hmm, that’s very fine in the mouth – mineral and fluid – almost a dynamic energy. Practically juicy in the finish, even a hint zesty – that’s a lovely wine – a great white Fixin!
