1999 Angerville Marquis d' Volnay Fremiets

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

Medium ruby red colour with a cherry red rim. Other than a red nose of raspberry and cherry it’s hard say much about this wine – everything seems in balance – but I find it very hard to say something interesting. I certainly didn’t find anything wrong with the wine and there’s really good concentration with well judged acidity – but frankly I think it’s closing up – wait another five years before opening another!

1999 Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Varoilles

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

Deep ruby with a slightly cherry rim. Coffee and dark cherry fruit. Fresh palate due to good acidity light to medium grainy tannins but a nice penetrating finish. I would have preferred more fat for a 1er Cru but this wine has lovely complexity. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

1999 Rion Daniel Bourgogne Blanc

Straw coloured, just a trace of green at the rim. A wide, faintly citrus nose over a melony base. Fatter than the Aligote and also a little less simple. Good acid and medium length. Almost good.

1999 Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc

This is pale yellow with a very prominent peach and apricot nose – most individual. Fat, with a very wide palate and good acidity. I liked the style but my wife didn’t like the nose. Individual and very good.

1999 de Bucy Joseph Bourgogne Blanc

Pale yellow colour. The nose has good depth, is quite fresh and high toned with some green apple notes. Good fat and despite being a little sweet the acidity brings it nicely into balance. This wine actually has very good depth and length. Most of the grapes are sourced from Meursault – and you can tell. Excellent Bourgogne Blanc.

1999 de Bucy Joseph Meursault Narvaux

By on May 31, 2003 #asides

Slightly deeper lemon yellow. Much deeper nose – slightly smokey and ripe – there’s a little melon and pineapple, becomes more honeyed and gradually a waxy note comes through. The nose develops really well. The palate is a little buttery and nicely deep. This is a big, rather than an elegant, wine. The acidity is just right. Finishes just a little dry. Boisterous – but I like it.

1999 de Bucy Joseph Meursault Bouchères

Of the Meursault 1ers, only Les Gouttes d’Or sits more northerly. Similar colour to the ‘Narveaux’. The nose is higher toned and a little more restrained – in fact nicely delicate with some mild citrus notes. Really silky texture in the mouth. More complex with good acidity. Much longer finish than the ‘Narveaux’. A completely different expression. Beautiful wine.

1999 Confuron-Cotetidot Chambolle-Musigny

Medium-plus cherry red. The nose is a very forward mix of of red and black cherries. Nice mouthfeel again with medium velvetty tannins coupled with good acidity and fruit concentration. Also a very good villages – I marginally prefer the Vosne-Romanée.

1999 Confuron-Cotetidot Vosne-Romanée

By on March 31, 2003 #asides

Medium-plus cherry red. The nose is a subdued strawberry and respberry number – very smooth. Lovely mouthfeel, lots of high-toned fruits, good acidity and medium, velvetty tannins. Persistent finish too. This is a very good villages wine.
