Charmes-Chambertin

Dark, wide, smoky oak mingles with sweet fruit – it’s actually quite exciting. After the Cortons this seems a little strict though the mid-palate is intense and ends with a very nice finish.

A gorgeous nose of sweet, melting red fruits – super perfume – it smells more than 10 years older! The tannin has almost been resolved, though there’s still a bit of blocky ‘grab’. The flavours have a darker, possibly oak influenced edge. It’s a shame to spit this one out!

Sweet aromas that remain fresh despite a hint of mushroom. Silky, plenty of fat and still with a slug of ripe tannin. Good in the mid-palate too – this is very good.

True Charmes. The wide and comforting nose is ripe and rather plush – lovely cherry fruit. Density, concentration and lots of dimension – chew and you’ll find even more. Understated acidity, yet there’s some cream-wrapped minerality too. An excellent Charmes.

A melange of quite forward red and black fruit notes – gives a soft impression. After the Latricières the tannin seems more grainy, though it’s not particularly astringent. Pretty wine – or maybe I should rather say ‘Charming’.

A wide impression of dark fruit on the nose – very nice indeed. Good concentration with plenty of dimension to the lovely fruit flavours. The tannin has a little grain though shows no astringency. A long barrel-driven finish today.

There’s a deep core of colour here – looks relatively mature. The nose starts deep, sweet and earthy – that’s a great start – concentrated, macerating dark fruit that very slowly gives up a redder berry-note. In the mouth there is intensity, depth and really good acidity – it is a luxurious rather than ‘fat’ impression. The tannin is a mere after-thought and the flavours, with a bitter chocolate edge, linger very well. Despite it being more than 15 years since it was harvested, it’s still a young wine, but clearly it’s in an early phase of maturity and certainly drinkability! A clear ‘rebuy’ with it’s blend of power and elegance. Really super stuff.

Medium colour. Open, with sweet oaky elements and rather fainter fruit. Concentrated, with decently textured structure – there’s lots of wine here, but despite a great finish I’d like a hint more acidity/freshness.

Medium-pale colour. Lovely breadth and focus to the mainly red fruit, a creamy aspect too. In the mouth it’s fresh and has good dimension and complexity. Long finishing in a surprisingly mineral (for Charmes) way. Lovely
