harvest – a couple of quotes

By billn on September 17, 2011 #vintage 2011

More for fun than info:

Laurent Ponsot:

“Today’s our last harvest day (Friday 16th!) and for sure I’m quite busy… I’m working one month per year and it’s now!!! More to come in a while on that subject…”

Yves Confuron (de Courcel):

“I’m up to my neck in it, we finish today” (that’s Saturday 17th!)

pierre boisson auxey 1er en reugne…

By billn on September 16, 2011 #degustation

I can safely say, this is my first en Reugne – actually I think it’s my first Pierre Boisson too! I like the label, but the capsule is thin, cheap plastic – real cork lies below but only with a serial number on it – nothing to identify the domaine or the cru. Auxey always has to reach a price-point I suppose…

2008 Pierre Boisson, Auxey-Duresses 1er En Reugne
Pale yellow. The nose is high-toned, faintly floral and has a nice energy about it – perhaps a little sherbet but not too much so. In the mouth, acid and intensity are my first thoughts – but it’s a rather invigorating acidity – plenty of energy and fun here. Kept cool, this absolutely the perfect aperitif for now. Wait 12 months and you might be wincing. Lovely today, but don’t delay!
Rebuy – Yes But only for the next six months…

meaningless millions…

By billn on September 16, 2011 #site updates

How can I be so proud? It’s frankly meaningless given that the site has been up and running since the end of 2002, yet having installed webstats at the end of 2009, I can’t help but feel a pang of pride as, yesterday, we pass the one-million mark. I suppose a little over half a million per year is not so bad…

maison bichot – white winemakers of the year(?)

By billn on September 16, 2011 #annual laurels

I little birdie tells that Alain Serveau of Maison Albert Bichot is the IWC’s white ‘winemaker’ of the year. Those are my quotation marks given that Alan probably didn’t get his hands too dirty during the process, rather I expect he provided the ‘direction’ 😉 Well done Alan – a friendly and humble man.

Apparently the Corton-Charlemagne of Bichot’s Domaine du Pavillon 2009 was the winner of both the 2011 White Burgundy Trophy and the ‘French White’ Trophy. I have to say that a bottle of the 2001 earlier this year was nothing short of tremendous!

For the reds it’s another ‘Burgundian’ winemaker – Patrick Landanger – who also scooped IWC Champion Red Wine of the year with his 2009 villages Chambolle. I really must catch up with what he’s doing in Volnay!

harvest – domaine louis chenu (savigny)

By billn on September 15, 2011 #harvests#vintage 2011

Merci

book: the finest wines of burgundy…

By billn on September 15, 2011 #books, maps, magazines, films even podcasts!

It seems that I am ‘outed’.

With the title already listed on amazon (amongst other places) it’s time to come clean. Now you can see why my Spring Burgundy Report was a bit late and also why I was forced to taste so many wines in the last few months – pesky research eh…(!)

Actually, and naturally enough, I loved the research, but committing everything to paper (okay, okay – typing!) now that’s something else; but alone, Jon Wyand’s photos are to die for.

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully express my gratitude to the publishers for showing faith in such a non-establishment (perhaps not quite anti-establishment) author; or more correctly at the time, ‘potential author’; but it was paramount for me to bring entirely my own face and understanding to this work – I pretty-much interviewed them (they were desperate – Jasper was busy!). With this handy format book (it can always be in your travel bag) I’m aiming to explode a few myths, generally improve everybody’s drinking experiences and showcase some new talent – but without being facile – clearly modest targets!

Despite the title of ‘finest’ you may interchangeably use the word ‘interesting’. The readers of this site will have met many of these producers already – but people who buy books have a habit of being a quite different audience.

Having been paid a generous sum to write the book, it makes no (financial) difference to me if the publishers sell twenty or twenty million copies, but it’s now on pre-order at amazon, and frankly for peanuts. You’ve nothing to lose and everything to gain 😉

l&a lignier 2008 fixin champs vosgers…

By billn on September 13, 2011 #degustation

2008 L&A Lignier, Fixin Champs Vosgers (blanc)
Medium yellow. The nose is faintly sweet with an undertow of flowers and maybe a hint of sulfur. In the mouth this has a lovely bubbling acidity – I remember the 08 being borderline tart – bright and pretty but with a nice sweetness and extra width of flavour in the mid-palate. Lingering on a mouth-watering note. Many Fixins seem to me rather too savoury in their youth and whilst interesting, I wouldn’t be filling my cellar with them. This one avoids that ‘trap’ and begs a top-up to the glass. Yum.
Rebuy – Yes

blue sky…

By billn on September 12, 2011 #random

After a wretched end to last week – we start afresh this week.

I’m sipping a simply lovely 2008 Fixin Champs Vosger (that’s a white wine!) from L&A Lignier whilst trying to decide where some of my Swiss EP purchased 09s, delivered today, should go. South to north; Pavillion Volnay Santenots, Bouchard Père l’Enfant Jesus, G&P Ravault Ladoix Le Bois Roussot and last, but not least, M&P Rion’s Chambolle Charmes.

I suppose I should give them a week or-so to settle down…
