Côte de Nuits vineyard royalty this afternoon…
The weather just got better and better today – until nearly 9pm – when just as I was searching for my running shoes the heavens opened. Maybe I’ll run tomorrow instead, but the forecast isn’t good…
I visited Chablis today – still 22°C but with a cooler wind. April almost brought a new record here – a daytime temperature of 31°C, but more impressive, one night of 20°C. But all change just now…
Yesterday evening into this morning brought 2°C, and both Monday and Tuesday nights to come are forecast at 0°C.
In the grand crus – Les Clos mainly – not only have some domaines already prepared candles – just in-case – others have made tents to protect their vines from the cold. There are two separate plots in Les Clos – both at the bottom of the hill (the candles likewise) with the same silver-grey tent material. Fingers crossed for next week!
First, this week’s trilogy:
This week is a great mix; yesterday les Aligoteurs were showing their wares in Flagey-Echézeaux – almost 50 domaines – I’m ashamed to say that I only tasted the wines of 27 domaines – but that was already nearly 4 hours and almost 80 wines worth – after which my palate said ‘STOP!’ Seemingly there had been too much talking! The weather was cooler and quite wet – the 16°C was actually perfect for tasting aligoté in tents though – it would have been much too warm over the weekend!
Today and tomorrow it’s Gevrey-Chambertin – continuing my Latricières-Chambertin quest for the April report – getting closer to 50 different Latricières tasted! Thursday sees a dip into Mâcon territory and then Friday an excursion to Chablis. The weather is a little cooler – about 20°C but the sun is still shining, as you can see from the images…
Looking down on Puligny from La Garenne
I might have started at 5pm, the but the temperature was never lower than 26°C for my 7km of cross-country – I’ve not yet adjusted to the temperature – so it could have been easier! Starting at Hotel Le Montrachet, through the vines and up past Chevalier-Montrachet, through the brush, higher through St.Aubin Dents du Chien, taking the right-turn between Le Trezin and La Garenne to Blagny and then the route separating Meursault Charmes and Puligny Combettes. Finally right-turn back to Puligny and a cold drink back at Hotel Le Montrachet.
