Nicolas on 2020:
“2020 – ah, if all vintages were like this, it would be fine for us! More freshness than in 2018. We finished the harvest in August – the 30th – never before have we finished in August but we don’t have the impression that we have wines from a hot year. The bottling for the 2020s is planned for February-March. In the end, the market is fine, except that we don’t have enough wine – 2021 hasn’t helped – 5 hl/ha in Perrieres – on average maybe we made 25% of a normal vintage in 2021.”
The wines…
A tasting that started slowly but each wine was just a little improvement on the previous – we ended up with a number of great wines for their respective labels…
All cork at this domaine except that screw-caps may be available too.
2020 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Malpoirier
They have always vinified this separately and found it better than their starting Bourgogne (Côte d’Or) but until this is the second year that they have separated the two.
Quite a perfumed nose – heavy and forward. Round quite full but a nicely saline and complex – long too – slightly savoury – excellent.
2020 Meursault
An assembly of many parcels, for instance, a blend of high Vireuils and low Limozin amongst others.
A deeper nose, some minerality on display slowly more perfumed. More direct, more mouth-watering – that’s very delicious wine – I love this finish
2020 Meursault Clos St.Felix
‘Le Village’ on the maps. Next to the domaine, exiting Meursault towards Puligny
Depth again with a little more fat. Still some direction but here there’s width too – complex – attractive, slightly spiced – simply excellent wine – vibrant finishing too.
2020 Meursault Grands Charrons
Hmm – that’s a nicely mineral nose – a little vibration of energy. Fresher, nicely energetic, not too intense. Wide with ripples of finishing flavour. That’s delicious.
2020 Meursault Narvaux
More mineral and wide. – lovely freshness. Mouth-filling and effusive. This is layered, beautifully detailed and slowly lingering – Excellent wine – a beauty!
The first wine sampled form barrel
This nose is a little reductive, quite complex too. Really wide – I love the texture here – wide and deliciously mouthwatering – that’s a great Santenay!
From the ‘top of the bottom’ to the south.
A little closed up top, but with a reduction below there seems plenty of aromatic width. Ooh – that’s super, it’s direct, it’s mineral – the blend of parcels here is, on average, quite a high altitude – you note that – yes at the top we really have no soil… Love this wine…
Complex, slightly reductive. Fuller in the mouth, melting, complex – such an appealing wine – appealing for me to take another sip – I’ve got to say that that’s really a top Genevrières – bravo!
More open freshness in this aroma though still with a faint accent of reduction – more than I note the barrel. Silky, direct, cool – ooh, completely classic and very well done – Excellent Perrières, great wine.
And for the road:
2013(!) Meursault 1er Genevrières
A little aromatic development but not much. A wine that melts over the palate – ooh – that’s so good – concentrated and drinking deliciously well – I’ve not had a 2013 that I’ve disliked in more than 2 years…
