Marjolaine on 2021:
About 50% volume losses – exactly the same as in 2016 – the difference this year is that we have lots of Bourgogne and the crus were hit – it was the reverse in 16 – so the effect is much higher than 50% in terms of earnings as you can imagine…

Marjolaine on 2020:
40 hl/ha in reds and 50 in whites – I would say that’s optimal for us – fortunately, given the smaller 2021 coming after. I can call it an easy year though some of the vines on more superficial soils were quite stressed by the dryness.

The wines:

A very classy range from Thibault in 2020 – some of these wines are worth a special search!

All the reds are bottled plus the first three whites, most of the rest are in tank but some of the last are still in barrel – the last of the bottling will be just before the next harvest. All-natural cork, with NdTec for the grand crus – “With the evolution in the market I don’t think the cork quality has been higher than now – it would be a shame to change them,” says Thibault.

2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir Côte d’Or
All vines in the commune of Chassagne
Forward and perfumed – this is very open. Good attack – freshness and energy in one big wave of flavour. Holding a nice intense line of flavour and holding really well. A Bourgogne of power – that’s a beauty.

2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles-Vignes
Deeper, fuller, a little mineral and some darker red fruit. Pure, concentrated but also so fresh and energetic – clean finishing, the tannin so well hidden. That’s a super villages and so long too. Bravo.

2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Chaumes Vieilles-Vignes
Next to Boudriotte
Some higher tones – a fine and forward a bright red fruit with an accent of florals again. So bright and wide – the acidity is more forward here but the texture is completely super. Really intense finishing and again showing that beautiful texture – so long. Drink early or late but possibly not in the middle with this acidity – so 0-3 years and 15+

2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Clos St.Jean.
The old original section, just this domaine and Domaine Paul Pillot are here.
A more delicate nose – floral, elegant and very, very attractive. Ooh – that’s lovely in the mouth – probably the acidity is not so different to the last but the flavour here is delivered in such a beautifully fluid and open style. Gorgeous wine!

2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Morgeot
Was a blend, but the Fairendes is now pulled out and planted with white, so just Francemont above Cardeuse, close to Tête de Clos on the Santenay side of Morgeot. 50% new oak for these two premiers.
Fuller and deeper redder – highly attractive fruit. Mouthfilling – a wine of large-scale – more overtly powerful but never dense or heavy. The only of these reds where a little oak is visible in the flavours – but it won’t hang around for long. Really super again – and another wine that’s so well textured.

Les Blancs:

2020 Bourgogne Chardonnay Côte d’Or
This also from the commune of Chassagne
This has a warm spice width of aroma. Pure precise, growing in intensity, plenty of waves of mouth-watering flavour. The warm spice of the aroma returning in the finish – that’s a simply excellent wine.

2020 Chassagne-Montrachet
A more mineral-citrus hybrid style for this nose. There is more width and concentration to this wine too – fine acidity balancing all – slowly mouth-watering – this is a considered, slightly contemplative wine – but what a delicious wine too!

2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Houillières
Domaine – Direction Vide Bourse on the Puligny side of the Route Nationale. This is the last of the bottled wines.
That’s a nose of width and attractive yellow fruit – less finesse to start but it comes – full of floral accents. Extra finesse and more mouth-watering intensity – that’s a special villages – so vibrant in the finish. A great villages.

2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er en Caillerets
An airy yet fuller nose – super-elegant. There’s a more relaxed width and richness to this wine, agrume fruit and super balance. The flavour mouth-watering with energy in the finish. Very long, very faintly accented with some barrel – that’s excellent.

2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er La Romanée
A fuller nose but with clarity and depth – very pure citrus here. Energetic and mouth-watering, a small cushioning of richness, then a fine and mouth-watering energy, a little saline – that’s another excellent wine.

2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er En Remilly
More depth and a little more freshness to this nose – that’s very impressive! A tighter ball of energy – and what clarity to this flavour too. Slowly mouth-watering – quite a considered but long finish. Still with a last note that’s more mineral. Excellent…

2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Dents du Chien
All of this was lost in 21…
Fuller and wider, starting with a little spice and then a brilliant clarity of mineral and citrus -oh yes! Wow – incisive, silken, direct, mouth-watering. Fabulous – Grand Vin!
2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Blanchots de Dessus
Completely different but a great nose again – deeper and wider – fabulous. Fuller with a richer palate of flavour but never heavy, ultra-complex, less direct. The oak is showing a bit more today – but you won’t see that in 6-12 months. More concentrated than the last and undoubtedly great wine too – but given the choice of only one to take home, give me the Dents this year!

2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Les Pucelles
A contract…
This nose is more reticent to open – the faint barrel spice is evident but to start, not much more. Direct, nicely structural wine with a very impressive width of finishing flavour – a clean wave. Overall this barrel sample is not showing the same clarity of flavour as the others today but the finish is lovely and lingering…

2020 Bâtard-Montrachet
From the Chassagne side, close to the only tree in the vineyard! ‘Still young vines – 25 years old.
Starting more compact but this nose has a vibration of minerality at its base – only very, very slowly opening with a little more floral complexity. Hmm- that’s super – direct but still with an element of width – the flavour is vibrant and slightly cushioned. The finish turns ultra-wide – not with impact but with a long slow mouth-watering effect. That’s a beauty. Really a super finale.
