Marion cautioned me before making the appointment ‘Given the very low volumes, I won’t be able to offer all the wines to taste – do you still want to come?‘ Well what do you think I would answer? The reward is always great here!

Marion on 2022:
A normal year but evidently such pleasure after the complications and volumes of 2021 – I liked the quality of the grapes too.

Marion on 2021:
I can really say a catastrophe for the whites – the reds were just a little better. The volumes here were much worse than in 2016 and my father has also never seen similar. Minus 50-80% except where there was none – I haven’t done the global volume for the domaine but minus 70% sounds about right… I’m happy with the esprit of the wines – their freshness and also their terroir – I think this is top – I can’t say it’s the vintage of the century but for these important criteria I think we have something lovely.

The wines…

A short but very sweet tasting. There are excellent wines at this very consistent domaine!

Starting with reds, nothing is bottled but all the wines are assembled:

2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Grands Liards
A full nose, of ample ripeness, and there’s volume to this red-fruited aromatic. Supple, melting, cool fruit – juicy but still with some generosity. This will be a beautiful bottle – finishing with energy and plenty of delicious complexity…

2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Les Serpentières
Similar width of aroma but more airy in this case. More direct and more mineral I the mouth – the silk of the texture more obvious. The finish is a beauty, growing wider, silky, then even with a faintly chalky finish. Again delicious and whilst less powerful there’s more elegance and persistence vs the Liards.

Les whites…

2021 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Cuvée des Forgets
Nicely perfumed citrus here. Fine volume in the mouth, a hint of gas but this is fresh, detailed and with a fine clarity. It’s completely delicious – with fine intensity too.

2021 Meursault Les Clousots
‘Tillets and Cromin had such large losses…’
Hmm, that’s a breadth of fine and vibrant aroma – a great invitation. Proper Meursault – beautifully shaped, growing in intensity – the subtle spice of this appellation. Floral finishing too that’s simply excellent wine!

2021 Meursault Tête de Murger
Less breadth but this nose shows a little more aromatic depth. Vibrantly fresh, modestly tannic too – a simply beautiful line of flavour that runs, indeed vibrates, through the centre of this wine. Once more, a little floral lift in the finish – a finish that’s so broad and persistent – this is another absolutely super wine, indeed it’s a great villages!

Agree? Disagree? Anything you'd like to add?
