Jean-Louis explained that because of hail the previous day he was occupied with spraying his affected vines with tizaine “Our new high training with a single stake per vine helped protect the grapes a lot – the tops of the vines took the brunt of the bad weather so I’m hopeful that not too much is lost – we have more shadow on the grapes which helps in the hotter years – but more protection from above too.” But Jean-Louis was happy that Juliette Sabon could take on the task of showing their 2020s, the vintage he described as “Hot with not much in the way of maladies, simply a reduction in the amount of juice.” It was Juliette’s first week chez Trapet but coming from a well-known domaine from elsewhere in France (Domaine de la Janasse in Courthezon) she obviously knew her way around a cellar.

The wines…

Always a treat to taste these wines – it will come as no surprise that there are a number that are worth your time to make a special search for them!

2020 Marsannay
Made since 1985 when it was labelled as Bourgogne – as the AOC was retroactive and they still had some older bottles in the cellars and they could use the label for those. There are two main components, 60% of which is Grasses Têtes but they are vinified apart.
Floral perfumed but with depth and clarity – that’s a lovely nose. There’s freshness and direction to this wine – super energy and not a little minerality at the base – super finishing.

2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1859
Named after the date that the great grandparents bought their first parcel – In 1995 it was converted to Biodynamics by Andrée
More direct, less width – extra fine perfume – really super. Extra width in the flavours though – the minerality more present with an extra creamy depth of finishing flavour here – great villages!

2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Ostrea
Mainly from older vines, 3 parcels in the direction of Brochon.
A less powerful nose – as so often for this cuvée – but still perfumed and open. Again wide, and mineral a little more intensity and a little extra depth to the texture – more saline finishing. I love this finish despite that I’d certainly take the previous wine in preference today…

2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Clos Prieur
A deeper colour to match the deeper nose – there’s a little more ripeness to these aromas. Wide, with a mm of textural depth – the tannin modestly more visible. The flavour is ingraining here – the structure is much more visible. Super wine – but be patient with it!

2020 Chapelle-Chambertin
A more accommodating depth of aroma – becoming beautifully floral. Direct, fresh – I love the attack. Here is such a mineral shape and energy with a creamy extra dimension to the flavour – grand vin.

2020 Latricières-Chambertin
Perfumed – more rose style though not overtly from wc. Also beautifully wide and beautifully textured. Haunting width of aroma. Here the Chapüelle is more demonstrative but not ‘better’ – simply an excellent wine…

2020 Chambertin
Three parcels and three different types of soil – indeed a huge difference from bottom to the top; deep and clay at the bottom then some gravel in the middle and some white marne at the top ‘which brings a little tannin’.
A gorgeously enveloping nose. Still mineral, vibrant, pure, very slowly fading – really the wine with the most, if the least words – Bravo!
2005 Chambertin
Much more complex – though I slightly prefer the previous wines’ extra purity. Beautifully mineral still, complex, clearly some development and a largely hidden but appreciable structure. This is a great bottle but I think the 2020 will be the greater!

As is usual, we finished with a tasting of their domaine in Alsace’s rieslings – and, also, as usual, I bought a pack of their Riesling Beblenheim!
