Vincent on 2020:
Obviously it was the covid vintage! It was both a very early vintage and a very dry one too. For the first time in the history of the estate, we harvested our reds before our whites – our picking commencing on 26 August – our reds rarely exceeding 13.5° in this vintage.

The wines…

I found a great range of 2019s here. The 2020s are almost to the same level. I find impressive levels of consistency at this domaine now – well done!

Maybe some Ladoix to start? This domaine is farming more than 8 ha in Ladoix – white and red. 2020 is the second vintage for reds and the first in white with some amphora-based cuvées. “In terms of pH and volatile acidity I find completely different wines at the end of elevage despite the base wine being the same!

We start with the reds:

2020 Ladoix
A blend of multiple climats
Deep colour, some vibrancy of dark fruit – slightly menthol accented. Concentrated and silky before a small grain of tannin slowly surfaces to support the rest of the wine. Dark fruit, round and generous, dark finishing.

2020 Ladoix Dolia
Dolia – Amphora in Latin.
Slightly more airy aromatics, some extra perfume too. A little more gas and more elegantly, less generously, proportioned but delicious. I slightly prefer the extra kick of finishing freshness of this wine. I think this is excellent…

2020 Ladoix Clos de Chaignots Monopole
This with a diam 5 haute de gamme, 2.35 hectares in Ladoix and a monopole chez Ardhuy
A much higher-toned nose – citrus, almost tending towards orange fruit – mixed with herbs like rosemary and others. Mouth-filling – more structurally shaped with excellent freshness – again the herb, tending towards pyrazine but today (at least) not quite – really perfumed flavour. This is absolutely delicious today.

2020 Ladoix 1er Bas Murottes
Width and freshness of aroma that grows in purity. In the style of the previous wine but with a little more fluidity of flavour and more dimension of flavour. Great Ladoix…

2020 Aloxe-Corton
Boutières and Valozières here with cork. Trescasses NdTech
More density of aroma to start, only slowly releasing some darker red fruit perfume. Broad, mineral, the growing intensity with good energy. A delicious wine with a very slowly mouth-watering finish – an almost stony finish…

2020 Aloxe-Corton 1er Les Chaillots
Deeper and more mineral at the base but elegantly light perfume overlaying this. Extra impact, and flavour energy. An über-small grain of tannin in support, A wine that you will gain some benefit from patience but can already enjoy some of the excitement it brings today.

2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Aux Clous
Cork. The biggest parcel of the domaine at 6.5 ha – over 1 hecatre currently replanted. Narbantons also replanted and should return in 2022.
Ooh, that’s got deeply cushioned aromas with a little more earth at the base – lovely. Mouth-filling, energetic, cool fruit but with super energy. Great Savigny – Bravo!

2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Les Peuillets
Here’s normally the ripest and earliest ripening of the domaine’s Savignys – Guettes & Narbantons included in the others from the domaine.
Almost saturated colour. A deep nose, less definition, slightly over-ripe but still with lots of complexity. Mouth-filling and generously flavoured with lots of dark fruit. Particular but very tasty…

2020 Pommard 1er Les Fremiets
Also almost a saturated colour. This nose is less open but with spice notes. Mouth-filling with a really executive, silky, texture here. I find the middle and finishing flavours gorgeous – just beautiful – the first part of the flavours, by comparison, and the nose need to be more open. Certainly excellent, potentially better than that…

2020 Côte de Nuits Villages
The younger vines from within the Clos de Langres
Less colour than most of the previous wines. Airy, open, redder fruit. Easy over the palate with good energy – a juicy and nice intensity to this fruit.

2020 Côte de Nuits Villages Clos des Langres Monopole
3.14 hectares.
Not a powerful nose yet one of good width and a slowly growing higher-toned redder-fruited perfume. Structurally this is more interesting and shows a little more tannin – very small-grained – another wine with an almost black-cherry-stone finishing flavour. Really one of the best Langres I’ve tasted from here – well done!

2020 Corton Renardes
An important producer of this wine – 1.6 ha – ‘This was a wine that I found rather strict when I came to the domaine and worked to reduce that, more by infusion – less pigeage hoping for a more supple wine.’ An assembly of low middle and higher parcels – not harvested the same days – as much as 4 days between the first and last and as the tanks are cooled they are still mixed before the start of fermentation. Some wc for this particular wine.
A broad nose – with some pyrazine complexity. Open, cool fruit – really an absorbing complexity – a texture of velour. Lots of finishing presence – a proper GC length. More than very good grand cru…

2020 Corton Clos du Roi
2 parcels almost 1 hectare.
A silky width of very dark fruit aroma – just a little less clarity but no lack of generosity. Great shape and presence in the mouth – cool fruit and almost a fluidity to these flavours. Simply excellent.

2020 Corton Pougets
In a good year two barrels!
More airy, less forced than some of the recent wines – that’s very elegant if still compact nose. A luxurious, fluid, delivery of cool-fruited flavour – yes! A persistence that majors on the structure and shape – but it’s very long… Bravo!
2020 Vosne-Romanée 1er Les Chaumes
Original vines from 1901…
Here’s more aromatic focus – slowly adding a little perfume. Open, fresh, mouth-filling and energetic. What a super wine – really the most clean and intense finishing wine so far. Bravo 1er cru…

2020 Clos de Vougeot
An airy nose again – complex, almost spiced. Ooh – that’s really a fine texture – this is another wine with a proper presence – even a line of blood-iron in the finishing flavours. Simply an excellent CV!

Les Whites…

2020 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune Les Perrières
Diam-style seal here. 1.12 ha above Savigny, two-thirds stainless steel elevage – the wood almost half new…
A perfumed top note over a more citrus base. Mouth-filling, vibrantly flavoured – plenty of punch to this flavour too. Wide and honied flavour in the finishing flavours. Simply a super ‘Bourgogne.’

2020 Ladoix Blanc
Blend of Combottes, Chaillots and Chagnots. DIAM5-sealed – a mix of stainless-steel and barrel elevage.
Similarities to the last but the initial aromatic attack is more insistent and agrume-fruit in style. Some gas. Slightly grained texture. The flavour quite generous but still fresh. A dynamic finish – here it’s simply excellent. Lovely taste…

2020 Ladoix Dolia Blanc
Amphora wine…
Lighter colour. A more stony, mineral start. In the mouth, it’s the minerality and the gushing, mouthwatering, flavour style that adds a little finishing tannin. I’d keep this a little before drinking, unlike the last. Very good.

2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Blanc Clos des Godeaux
Diam-style seal
Darker colour. A nose of more depth but narrower and with a mineral focus. Incisive, cooler fruit flavour, and a very wide panorama of flavour – absolutely no hint of the 100% new oak. An excellent wine again…

2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Suis le Puits
A more cushioned, more obviously agrume aroma. Actually quite a powerful palate with a depth of concentrated fruit, ripe and citrus in style. A big wine but such a persistent wine too.

2020 Corton-Charlemagne
Over 2 ha. Rognets et Corton high up, plus a parcel in Languettes and another in Pougets, and finally a tiny parcel in Carrières. Now with a wax disk between the cork and the capsule.
Here the nose is showing plenty of citrus-skin bitters. Mineral, concentrated lots of citrus complexity. Here’s a very high-class Charlemagne – well done!
