2003

2003 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Clos St.Landry

Versus 2002 this has a much denser nose with less initial complexity – a few fresh bread notes perhaps. The palate is equally dense though manages to retain almost good freshness. It’s quite nice though I prefer the 2002.

2003 Pavelot Jean-Marc et Hugues Savigny-lès-Beaune Blanc

Actually contains some old-vines (50 yo) pinot blanc. Pale yellow colour. The nose bursts with melon, pineapple and green-apple skin. Some fat, and despite a mouthwatering finish, my taste begs more acidity. Whilst quite simple in the mouth there’s a really engaging and long finish.

2003 Bichot Albert Bourgogne Pinot Noir Vieilles Vignes

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Medium cherry-red colour. High-toned with kirsch on the nose, swirling reveals red fruit and a green note. The palate shows quite a vegetal mid-palate – not quite right. The replacement bottle is completely different, deeper coloured, sweeter nose and nothing green on the palate. Almost good structure. This is a well-made wine that would make a good house red, but leave it for another year first.

2003 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay Fremiets Clos de la Rougeotte

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

On the nose there’s a little less ‘punch’ than the ’03 Enfant’. It’s higher toned and mixes red and black notes, slowly giving up a concentrating cherry edge. Super softness, creamy and concentrated fruit with a complexity that is not today apparent from the ‘Enfant’. A slight dry edge to the tannins on the finish. Lovely.

2003 Bichot Albert Mercurey Champs Martin

The land (1.0 ha) was only purchased recently. Medium-plus cherry-red. It’s a ripe nose that is both fresh and a little earthy though tighter than the last wine. Good breadth to the fruit and harmonious acidity and tannin. This is a young, fresh and quite explosive package that has a good shot at elegance as the structure softens – very interesting.

2003 Comte Liger-Belair La Romanée

Blood red fruit. Luxurious mouthfeel with many layers to the fruit – superbly balanced – so much so, that it was hard to pick out specific attributes but the finish lingers with a style that leaves you remembering the wine for some time after.

2003 Pataille Sylvain Marsannay Clos du Roy

By on October 31, 2004 #asides

The medium colour is a little more ruby shaded than the Bourgogne. The nose shows some high tones but is a little tighter than the Bourgogne. Even nicer mouthfeel, good velvetty tannin and excellent acidity. There’s a slightly more roast character to the fruit – a little prune perhaps. Interesting and very tasty.

2003 Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée La Colombière

Medium-plus colour. The nose has intense fruit – more blue shaded than red. The palate has obviously ripe fruit that shows real depth, velvetty tannin. Intense and not at all jammy, this wine shouts out to advertise itself and is very impressive.
