Clos de Vougeot

2008 Max Louis Clos de Vougeot

Quite an interesting nose – dark red/black fruit is the focus. Lithe and linear, the tannins are on a medium level. Super balance, this seems very well put together but is perhaps a bit underpowered for a grand cru. Lovely wine though.

Deeper colour than the last Clos de Vougeot, a dark aroma fills the glass to match. Muscular and lithe there’s lots of structure here. After the last wine this is really powerful – real grand cru intensity. Lingers quite well. If the last was a lovely wine, this is a grand cru wine.

Magnum. Wow! Explosive, fresh, vegetal, earthy, a little sweet – absolutely compelling – and that’s just the nose. In the mouth there’s a hint of greenery, the impression still of some dark wood and a superb finish. Bravo!

Floral notes over a dark, fresh cherry base. Sweet and silky – plush without being fat. There’s plenty of structure though it’s mainly buried. Good energy too. Very good.

Here the aromas are complex and quite lovely; slightly warm and not too dense. On your tongue there is width coupled to minerality, fine acidity and an impressive, slowly fading length. Fresh personality and certainly a ‘keeper’.

A nice depth of pretty fruit on the nose – it slowly widens in the glass too. Mouth-filling, concentrated and intense. Mouth-watering, lingering flavours – very long. Not many words, but a super bottle.

2000 Vougeraie Clos de Vougeot

I wasn’t going to rush to open one of these, but given the relatively poor performance of the 2000 ‘Cras‘, I felt compelled to. Medium, medium-plus colour. Warm, ripe aromas with a hint of spice but without any loss of elegance and still a decent focus. Nicely mouth-filling, excellently textured and with understated, though sufficient, acidity. Decent depth of fruit and the faintest residue of tannin – only one complaint; there’s a hint of cola flavour that I don’t think appropriate for Clos de Vougeot. The finish is elegantly long. Neither a powerhouse nor a wine of mind-bending dimension – you might say not a great grand cru then, but this is a beautifully judged middle-weight that is in a very nice place at the moment. Most villages wines now cost more than I paid for this – I’d buy a dozen without a moment’s hesitation if I could pay the same price!

An elegant, more red-shaded nose that’s rounded with a little wood-spice. Plenty of ripe tannin and a really impressive complex intensity in the mid-palate that today is coated with tannin. Lovely base material.

2007 Terres d'Arômes Clos de Vougeot

50% new oak and the only one of these wines not yet bottled – it waits in the tank. Forward aromatics of deep and complex fruit. Structured, intense, it really holds its flavour well – a super finish after a super burst of fresh energy. Bravo! I understand Clos de Vougeot is not an easy sell these days, but perhaps that’s because most are much lower quality than this!
