1996 Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Varoilles

Bugger! After opening I noticed a few bubbles in the neck – I turned round to get my glass and when I returned the bottle was standing in a puddle of wine! How strange thought I – do they may sparkling reds? – then I realised that there had been a crack in the bottle, mainly covered by the label. Pulling the cork was enough to make the crack give-way. Unfortunately enough air had obviously got through over time as the wine was oxidised. Underneath it was concentrated and seemed to have good fruit – I’ll have to get another…

1999 Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Meix des Ouches

Darker than the 2000 but with a watery rim. The nose also has a black stance, slightly spicy too. Soft on the palate with smooth, sweet and quite dense (for a villages) fruit – yet I have the feeling that there’s a trace of dilution – not sure why. The finish is satisfying and the tannin and acidity are first rate though there’s a trace woody-ness. Certainly drinking now, but much more structure than 2000. A wine that I would buy again.

1998 Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Meix des Ouches

Despite having more to offer than meets the eye, this wine visually disappoints. The colour is a medium-pale, ruby-amber – it could be a weak looking 1985. The nose blows off a few slightly cooked and woodland notes to reveal a still, quite primary red fruity base. The fruit could be more concentrated on the entry, but there is a kick in the tail – a surprisingly intense mid-palate – then a medium, not so exciting finish. Improves quite a bit overnight but frankly I don’t know what to make of this wine. If I had a few in the cellar I think I’d drink all bar a couple and check them out for academic interest in a few years.

2002 Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Varoilles

Not quite so deep a colour as the 2003, more a medium-plus cherry red. High toned flowery nose with red cherry on a deep undertow of black-skinned fruits. Some fat and very smooth with good acidity. Shows well mannered tannins and mix of black and red fruits. Finishes with a little wood on the palate – but should be no problem at this age – and very good length. Will be a lovely wine.

2001 Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Varoilles

Medium-plus cherry red. Lovely high-toned nose over sweet red cherry. The palate is less fat than the 2002 and has much fresher acidity that comes across as a little harsh – doesn’t show the concentration of the last wine. Medium tannins that are quite smooth. The finish is a good one, this time with no wood. Much less charming than the 2002 though.

1997 Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Varoilles

Medium ruby red shading to amber. Again the nose is a little muted, same high tones but a more roasted aspect to the fruit. Fat with almost good acidity and still a little tannin. The rôti note is more obvious still on the palate. The finish is deep and admirably long but my preference would be for the previous wines.

A shade darker and less amber thane the ’97 Varoilles. A little coffee and slowly evolving black fruits on the nose. Again there’s good fat, but this time the fruit has a less obviously roast character. Tannins are pretty much resolved. Tasty and drinking now.

2000 Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Varoilles

The 2001 disappointed slightly after the 2002, but we’re back with a bang here. Medium cherry red, just fading a little at the rim. The now characteristic high-toned nose supported by cherry red fruit is in evidence. Lovely fruit with real depth – much friendlier than the last wine, but certainly not a ‘short-termer’. This is a really fine effort for a 2000, has everything it needs for 5-10 years of development.

1999 Varoilles Charmes-Chambertin

Just a little deeper coloured than the des Varoilles Gevrey 1er. There’s a little toasty oak but this is very well done as despite the young age, it already provides a good cocoa topping to the dark cherry fruit. The palate without showing great weight manages to produce an intense young fruit profile with well balanced acidity and buried tannins. Starting to close up a little but a wine worth following.
