A developed, medium ruby red. The nose has a lovely dried red fruit and raisin aspect – just a little coffee and smokey ash too. The palate unfortunately is a bit of a let-down: The fruit is nice enough – as is the texture – but from the mid-palate onwards this is a little bitter, weedy (for a Grand Cru) and woody. In fact the wood note hovers perilously close to taint, but we had two bottles with consistent notes. A shame, as I know the 1999 is a very nice wine. A friend had Alex’s ’98 V-R Suchots and it showed far better than this. Not worth the entrance price.

Medium, medium-plus ruby red. Nose starts very understated, shiny red berries and only hinting at some depth. On the palate this wine zings along with very fine acidity and well-put-together tannins, quite velvetty. Just a little grain on the finish – but I think this is more from the wood. The fruit is at first a little one-dimensional – to be fair the staff at Gambal always recommend decanting young wines to aerate saying that they are pretty reductive when bottled. Towards the end of the bottle the nose is more interesting with a blacker dried-fruit aspect, the palate also shows more complexity – for the price this wine is very, very satisfying.

Medium yellow. The nose is a nice blend of leesy, deep creamy notes and overlaying higher-toned, sweeter notes of subtle pineapple. The palate shows real intensity to the fruit and is coupled to super acidity – finishes with a real flourish. To be honest the intensity becomes wearing, but I’m drinking this way too young. Keep it cool as there’s a loss of focus when the temperature rises, otherwise this is a super wine in terms of both presentation and value – and now there’s a case in my cellar! Apparently the 2002 has a little extra ripeness and a little lower acidity, so sounds less likely to gain a place in my cellar – but you never know.

Deeper colour with waxy high fruit over a deeper toned base on the nose. Sweet, good acidity and shows a little more ‘width’ and fat than the Saint-Aubin. Creamy and fat on the the finish. This is lovely.

Medium cherry red. Cherry and pretty red fruits. The palate shows good acidity, medium tannins and a little coffee on the finish. Very 2000 and very nice. Not a big wine, but a rich creamy finish to remember it by.

Pale yellow. A subdued sherbet and toffee nose. Good fat and a lovely depth to the fruit. Good acidity too which pushes the finish along. There’s nice style here.

Bought in as wine. Dark young cherry colour. The deep nose has blueberry and black cherry. Fat with big velvetty tannins and a black fruit profile. Lovely concentration, though slightly diffuse – it’s hard to easily pick the individual elements. Overall this has very good style. The winery is keeping back a quantity of this wine – so if you spot some on the shelf in 3 or 4 years time – snap it up!

Medium, mediu-plus cherry red. Pronounced black cherry notes on the nose that slowly become ‘redder’ with time. Pure 2001-style fruit with good concentration. The finish is a good one too. I like this wine.
