The team continue to offer this rare bottling. A forward nose that mixes melon and pineapple. Good, quite forward acidity with a similar density to Bourgogne Prestige but there is more dimension and a slightly longer finish. 30-40% new oak was here and I think it needs to integrate a little more, but the base material is nice and fresh.
Gambal Alex
2006 Gambal Alex Meursault Clos du Cromin
2002 Gambal Alex St.Aubin Murgers des Dents de Chien
From magnum. Medium lemon-yellow colour. The nose is soft and sweet with a faint citrus edge over a note of ripe pear. In the mouth this has a soft texture and in particular has a lovely and impressively lingering, mineral intensity. The acidity is almost good and certainly leaves my mouth watering. This is a super little wine which I try to buy every year, great value.
2004 Gambal Alex St.Aubin Murgers des Dents de Chien
Pale lemon-yellow. A smooth nose of brioche and mineral notes and some quite bready depth – very appealing. This really stands apart on the palate, very good acidity coupled to nice minerality, yet there is good mid-palate impact. The finish is just a little oak driven at the moment, but this wine has drive and personality. Everyone enjoyed this very much.
2001 Gambal Alex Chambolle-Musigny Gruenchers
Medium ruby-red. The nose has some oaky depth overlayed by dense, though initially not so intense, creamy black cherry; with time the oak fades and the creamy fruit comes more to the fore. Understated entry – apparently only moderately concentrated to start with – but this very well textured wine builds intensity in the mouth. The overal picture is of black-shaded fruit just edged with a little oak texture, but this will fade (the oak!) – the finish is a reasonably long one. I enjoyed this a lot.
2004 Gambal Alex Volnay Santenots
Gambal’s second year with this wine, but due to the extra 2004 triage only 4 barrels instead of the usual 6. Another lovely high-toned nose, floral with a hint of steel – lots of interest. A little more structure than the Savigny, good tannins and concentration to match – the flavour really clings to your tongue – very impressive.
2004 Gambal Alex Clos de Vougeot
This year 4 barrels from two suppliers. Medium colour. The nose is very tight so giving little away, though a touch of cedar is apparent, eventually a little high-toned cherry evolves. Good, well textured tannins coupled to good concentration. Another 2004 Clos de Vougeot with classic austerity. Needs plenty of time.
1999 Gambal Alex Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots
Medium ruby-red. The nose is a wide and complex mix of powdery red cherry and interesting green/herbal spicy notes. Medium weight at best, but has good balance, well-mannered tannins and a very pretty lingering finish. A very pleasant bottle that offers good value, but definitely 2nd class vs the best from this vintage.
