Bouchard Père et Fils

2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Bourgogne Chardonnay

By on October 31, 2004 #asides

A medium yellow colour. The nose is quite nice, high-toned, sweet but not too sweet, with a little citrus depth. Open with no hard edges on the palate, there’s nice acidity with enough sweet fruit and a medium finish that has the merest young trace of bitterness. I wouldn’t complain if I ended up with a glass of this in a bar – a worthy house wine for consuming over the next three years and very good value.

A bright, medium ruby-red colour. The nose is a little reticent but there’s faint, sweet cherry with a developing orangey note. The palate doesn’t boast the concentration you’ll find in Bouchard’s Bourgogne Chardonnay, but given the price, this is very good. The finish betrays a little taint – which is a shame – but this is more than almost good for €5 in the French supermarket.

Medium cherry red. The nose is a quite pleasing red fruit number without ever being very interesting. The fruit on the palate is very nice, with reasonable depth too. What’s surprising is that (for a 2000) the structure slightly outweighs the fruit. In this case this in not obvious with food and the wine works very well.

1998 Bouchard Père et Fils Nuits St.Georges Clos St.Marc

What a wine… Deeply coloured, still cherry red but no fading. The nose soars with high toned berry fruit before slowly settling down to a deep, spicy-edged black-skinned fruit. Intense black fruit that really follows into the finish. Good acidity and tannins that really make themselves known if you keep the wine in your mouth, mouthwrapping though they are, they are also velvetty and not so astringent as many. Why did I only buy two…

A little lighter than the Potel wine and still cherry-red coloured. Still has hints of oak on the nose, but mainly a mix of red fruits. Very good acidity – like closing the jaws on a mouthful of cherries – without the stones! Medium-plus and quite drying tannins. This shows in a young way, but was a delight anyway.

Lufthansa first class! Medium/medium-plus colour. A little spice and subdued red raspberry fruit coated with subtle vanilla. Nice texture, medium concentration, good acidity and medium plus well-grained tannins. Good length on the slightly sweet fruit, a little banana too. I’d prefer the fruit to be a bit more concentrated but this is a nice drink at 35,000 feet and in this environment surprisingly refined – but couldn’t I have expected a 1er or Grand Cru in first class? , -)

1985 Bouchard Père et Fils Chambolle-Musigny

The hotel I stayed in had exclusively wines from the 1980’s! First bottle was medium ruby with an amber rim. The nose was aged but still quite fruity. The palate was on the downslope though with a nice light bodied profile which was just a little metallic – nice finish though. Bottle two was deeper coloured, slightly more alcoholic and less interesting nose. The palate was actually quite fat and interesting. Still good length. First bottle was almost good, second was good!

From the Southern part of NSG. Medium colour. Nose is reserved with some faint vanilla tones. Nicely concentrated fruit on the sweet palate. Medium tannins with almost good acidity. A persistent finish. This is good and quite drinkable already.

This is a relatively new vineyard for BP&F which was purchased in 1996 from the Domaine Ropiteau. Medium red colour. Understated nose is higher toned. Less fat perhaps then the previous wine but pure medium intensity fruit. Tannins are well represented, but don’t get out of hand. I’d leave this for 2 or 3 years, I think it should be almost good.
