Bouchard Père et Fils

2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne

By on February 28, 2003 #asides

From the top of Le Corton. Three passes through the vineyard for this wine, each vinified separately then assembled prior to bottling. Faint toast on the nose plus even fainter appley notes. Really intense palate, very full and fruity. Lovely length too. Really super.

2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet

By on February 28, 2003 #asides

Bouchard are significantly the largest owners in this vineyard with 2 of the 7.3 hectares. The vineyard which is in Puligny lies just above Montrachet itself but is characterised by much stonier and chalkier soil. The wine had a completely different nose to the Corton-Charlemagne, more refined with an amazing depth of high toned fruits. The density in the mouth was very similar to the C-C but to a completely different effect. Whereas the C-C starts with a bang, the C-M is more sedate but then builds to explosion on the finish. A really fantastic wine.

2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Nuits St.Georges Les Cailles

From the Southern part of NSG. Medium colour. Nose is reserved with some faint vanilla tones. Nicely concentrated fruit on the sweet palate. Medium tannins with almost good acidity. A persistent finish. This is good and quite drinkable already.

1997 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot

By on December 31, 2002 #asides

Medium garnet colour all the way to the rim. This has a true Volnay nose, high alcoholic tones and lovely red fruit with only the merest hint of oak left. Nice mouth feel with very good lingering acidity and still prominent, though not rough, tannins which are well buffered by the raspberry and red cherry fruit. Good length on this wine too, still needs at least 2 years though.

1998 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Clos du Roi

Medium ruby colour with the last traces of cherry. Nose is sweet red & black cherries with background tobacco. Palate is wide and lively with long acidity. The tannins are very smooth here. Very good wine.

1997 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus

By on December 31, 2002 #asides

A waft of oak is followed by smoke, then in succession, violets, strawberry and redcurrant confiture, ending with caramel and faint vanilla, so many layers – excellent. The palate has excellent density of primarily red fruits, lovely acidity but a very astringent finish. This improves with a minimum 2 hours in a decanter. Too young, but super potential.

1992 Bouchard Père et Fils Le Corton

By on December 31, 2002 #asides

Still deeply coloured for a burgundy, ruby with a hint of brick at the rim. The nose is very wide with sweet dried vine fruit and leather notes lower down. The palate is sweet and silky with still good acidity and grippy tannins, though not a bit rustic. Fruit has excellent density and is predominantly black. Length is on the long side of medium, with just a hint of creaminess. I’m sure I’ve not tried a better 1992, really top class and drinking beautifully now, but don’t wait as 2 hours after opening it gets a bit thin.

1991 Bouchard Père et Fils Le Corton

Deep ruby colour, this wine looks amazingly youthful, you could believe it to be a 97 or even a 98. The nose is a powerful blend of higher black cherry & plum fruit, coming down to more savoury, meaty aromas. The palate is incredibly tannic still, more reminiscent of younger Bordeaux than aging Burgundy. The acidity is still good whilst retaining intense ‘stone fruit’. There is no primary fruit left, but this wine is nowhere near maturity. I found this hard to like (unlike the 1992) and I’d say wait at least another 3 to 4 years before returning. Someone once said that the greatest Cortons are tough and powerful, this is both of those things but I’m not sure whether that makes it great !
