harvest 2009 update

summer sun

A couple of selected quotes from this week:

David Clarke @ Morey:

Things are looking good. The weather has essentially been warm and very occasionally stormy since my last update. The storms have brought a few millimetres of unneeded rain, but thankfully nothing worse. The forecast is also dry and sunny for the next week so optimism is definitely rising. There is still no rot and we are around 10% potential alcohol already. The acidity is relatively low, but I think many people are now hoping for something at little better than the 1997 vintage I mentioned a few weeks ago. I still feel the skins are quite thick and tough so would like to wait until around the 19th if possible, but will be ready to advance that by as much as a week if the weather dictates.

Juliette Chenu @ Savigny:

So far the vines are very nice, we have had rain ( small ) twice, but it did not affect the general quality. Tha sanitary state is beautiful…
We have had a lot of sun this august compaired to the last years. And if we trust the forecasts we will have another week of sun. We are planning to harvest around the 7/10 of September. From the BIVB technical bulletin, depending on the elements, the state of the vines can be compaired to 2006/2002 or 2005..We will know more in a weeks time..But we say that August makes the moût..So it is good news you can give…

And for those with a more technical interest:

Boisset to buy Antonin Rodet (?)

By billn on August 26, 2009 #asides#the market

From the Decanter newsfeed:

Burgundy-based wine company Boisset is in advanced negotiations with the owners of Antonin Rodet to take over its wine business.

This was the talk of town when I was in burgundy in June, I assumed the silence that followed indicated nothing was happening – it looks like maybe the holidays were to blame…

wine report r.i.p.

By billn on August 26, 2009 #asides#the market

stevenson_wine_reportI see from the Decanter newsfeed (‘click’ Decanter News at the top right of this diary page) that the Wine Report of, or rather edited by, Tom Stevenson may be no more. If Dorling Kindersley, that stalwart of (popular) wine publishing is giving up, I find it hard to see how WR may be resurrected. From the comments of TomS:

‘Everybody in the trade who has ever seen Wine Report wants the next edition as soon as it’s published’

– maybe they should try and get the trade to cough up the bulk of the publishing costs if they need a sustainable business model. It was certainly a curious concept in that all wine-producing regions got the same coverage, whether Belgium or Bordeaux – perhaps it was best suited to the trade. Shame, and they were such nice people 😉

Medium ruby-red. The nose has hints of dark, spicy oak and turned earth – as the glass drains there are beautiful flashes of red berries. Perfect freshness and still grainy, though generally background tannins. The flavours make a broad panorama on the tongue and are a mix of red berries and more raisined, lingering notes. Very long. I had the 99 a few months ago, but this seems much better focused and ‘together’ if perhaps not quite as concentrated. A lovely bottle and far from a shame to enjoy now.
Rebuy – Yes

vougeraie newsletter

Vougeraie NewsletterI’ve been getting a copy of this regular newsletter from Domaine de la Vougeraie for ages, but recently asked if I could have a pdf version for ‘archiving’. Having received a copy, I thought other people may also like to see it. The pdf format is not perfect, and that’s because this should be a 4 page, gate-fold article but as a pdf is only two pages – i.e. page 4+1, and page is 2+3, but I’m sure you’ll work it out 😉

long-depaquit 2001 chablis 1er vaillons

I was potentially setting up a bit of a whinge – the 1986 Mosel was opened first and the colour of the wine was medium lemon-yellow. As the worm of the corkscrew slid into the cork of the Chablis, the last of a tasty half-case, I was already mentally writing this note: ‘7 year-old oxidised Chablis versus baby-faced 22 year-old riesling’. Fortunately like every other bottle from this case – good quality at a decent price.

2001 Long-Depaquit, Chablis 1er Les Vaillons
Medium golden colour. The nose has some high tones of green-skinned fruit that balances a honied base enough to retain a fresh impression. Width and a little sweet fat – the acidity is fresh though from time to time nearly spiky. The flavours are mineral, a little baked bread and a final salty tang. The finish is quite long and totally savoury.

…and this white wine glass is meant for seriously huge oaked Chardonnays, of which Burgundy produces many, such as Pouilly Fuisse…

you live and learn! 😉
