offer of the day – robert groffier 2016

By billn on February 02, 2018 #the market

The prices for the 2015s, offered last year, are included for reference, in the brackets:

Domaine Robert Groffier

Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2016 75cl 39.50 (38.00) (Swiss Francs*)
Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées 2016 75cl 89.00 (79.00)
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Hauts Doix 2016 75cl 159.00 (146.00)
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 2016 75cl 179.00 (158.00)
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2016 75cl 399.00 (349.00)
Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2015 75cl 399.00 (349.00)
Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2016 75cl not offered (378.00)

First of all, I realise that yields in Chambolle were very low due to the frost, but these remain in my (old fuddy-duddy) mind, fantasy pricing. Yet I realise that whilst that is the common reaction for people who have been buying burgundy for 20+ years, for the new generation of buyers, they are the only prices that they know, and as one producer told me this year – ‘The higher I raise my prices, the more is the demand!

*There is an additional 8% Swiss sales tax to add to these prices, but there are no additional delivery costs.

today I will mainly be doing gevrey…

By billn on February 01, 2018 #travels in burgundy 2018

Highly variable weather today and a drop in temperature of more the 5°C – it’s damn cold in the wind now. The forecast is ‘maybe’ snow – the vignerons aren’t particularly excited by that – but they are very happy to see that there might be a few days with overnight temperatures as low as -6°C – they are happy about that! NIce to see that Faiveley have finished renovating the house in Les Issarts – it just needs an occupier now!

yesterday in gevrey, chambolle, morey – and venezuela (probably)

monday-tuesday

By billn on January 31, 2018 #travels in burgundy 2018

Rainy in Chablis on Monday, so despite 3 visits, only 1 pic. Those were the last of the visits for my 2016 Chablis (January) report – 60 domaines and still about 530 wines despite very low yields – online in about 3 weeks time. On Tuesday, in the Côte de Beaune, the weather wasn’t bad – until some rain about 5pm. Again 3 visits, but many more pics…

goodbye to gilles jayer

By billn on January 30, 2018 #sad losses...

Jayer-Gilles was a producer/estate that I firstly knew as a producer of expensively oaked wines that needed time in the cellar before I should approach them – my last bottle was drunk very recently, over Christmas.

Gilles Jayer, a cousin of Henri Jayer, took on some notoriety last year when his 11 hectare estate was sold for a bold sum to the Swiss, André Hoffmann. It was said at the time that Gilles would remain on hand to help manage the estate as required by the new owner. But it seems that behind those headlines, something was lurking, to which Gilles very recently succumbed. His funeral was today in the church of Magny-les-Villers.

weekend wines – week 4 2018

By billn on January 29, 2018 #degustation

Modest stuff – but tasty stuff!

2015 Alain Geoffroy, Chablis Domaine Verger
Sweetness and weight but freshness too. 2015 has, like 2016, super density which means that basic Chablis, such as this, really have a little extra to contribute. Wines like this are a little less overtly Chablis in that they are so easy to drink young – delicious.
Rebuy – Yes

1998 Thomas-Moillard, Vosne-Romanée 1er Malconsorts
My last of this was opened with Marko de Morey – and then poured down the sink – so badly was it infected with brett. This has just the merest aromatic suggestion of the same – but that’s where it stops.
Big, powerful, still with some tannin, but improving all the time with air. This had great bass-notes and extra dimensions of flavour, almost a creamy old-vine impression in the finish. ‘Old regime’ TM’s rarely come out to play before they are 20 years old, and this just barely so. But if you can avoid corruptions – like brett – then they are worth your time – I admired the first half of this bottle and loved the second half!
Rebuy – Yes

Clothilde Davenne, Cremant de Bourgogne Extra Brut
Keeping a weekend cremant them that I will push into February!
What a beautiful nose – small, sweet mirabelle – just so inviting. Fresh with a lovely line of acid-led flavours – beautifully balanced and absolutely moreish. Loved this!
Rebuy – Yes

a little st.vincent action

By billn on January 27, 2018 #events

No rain!

As Matt in a previous comment noted, very well organised, and it seems to me that the idea of having a concert with 300(+) people collected together in one place was good for keeping the streets just a little more ‘navigable.’ Apparently the organisors had problems with some people complaining that there was no red wine – presumably that would be the same people, who towards the end, were walking in (approximate) straight lines and who were ‘interacting’ with some of the displays 🙂

Already looking forward to the St.Vincent 2019 in Vezelay!
