picture-perfect volnay…

It was already cloudy by about 10:30 today, but what a beautiful start we had.

Growers remain concerned that the buds on some south-facing vines are starting to swell a little, and there is no end in sight to the mild weather (10°C and sun at 10am!), though we are still just behind the precocious beginning to 2007.

Anyway, enjoy…

more old beaune…

No Pommard today, and not so much blue sky either, but a cancelled appointment left time to walk the remparts of Beaune – I haven’t done that for years!

monday in beaune and pommard…

There were occasional patches of mist but as the sun came through the ploughed rows of vines began steaming – looked rather cool! A perfect Spring day with 12-15°C. A shame its February and the wines should be completely dormant. Everyone is hoping for a nice steady 2-3 weeks of -5°C or-so to kill off all that’s nasty and keep the vines from getting excited too early.

Nobody can afford them to be frosted this year!

Of-course it can’t always be sunny, otherwise I wouldn’t be here! But like a good (adopted) Swiss, I choose not to venture out when I can’t see the ground under my skis – although I may go for a jog! Will change resort tomorrow, finally home on Sunday. Still, that means time to write a few words…

Have drunk some 2011 Au Pied de Mont Chauve Chassagnes, 2010 Gambal Dents de Chiens and 2009 Mischief & Mayhem Puligny Sous les Puits – all good 😉

Now, of-course, there’s time to read something too. I like Adam BS, but really and truly, there is a level of commoditisation already to be seen, for a small cadre of Burgundy growers, that is far from divergent from Bordeaux, it’s just that the main importers and producers hardly profit from it! ABS may be able to point to less than 15% price increases for nameplate domaines, but you or I won’t get an allocation of those, because we don’t have an annual spend of over GBP 20k with Corney & Barrow – these wines will (of-course!) be available in the grey-market though – for 50-100% more than last year 😉

Back soon…

visiting the neighbours (in alsace…)

wolfberger

Saturday involved a short (1 hour) hop into the Alsace. We took a friend to visit the impossibly pretty village of Eguisheim for lunch, where the large co-operative called Wolfberger is sited. They’d had quite a make-over since last time I visited – très impressive! Just for the record, half a dozen Cremant Vieilles Vignes, a brace of Rieslings (2010 Eichberg and 2012 Muenchberg) and fine Pinot Gris (2008 Rangen) made it back chez moi.

My wife bought some dodgy 20% alcohol ginger concoction – for adding to beer – presumably to make ginger beer! She was also a little tempted by their Alsacienne single malt whisky, but in the end stayed firm…

Of-course there are other domaines to visit in Eguisheim too! 😉
