week 41’s ‘rogues’ gallery

By billn on October 14, 2017 #reports#travels in burgundy 2017

Some lovely visits to kick off the work for October’s 2016 White Burgundy Report. Wines that are really a surprise (to me) and it was particularly good to see some smiles on the faces of many vigneron(ne)s after their 2017 harvest – not everyone, but most.

Now it’s my birthday weekend (I’ve been told!) so time to open some bottles – no?

september’s burgundy report is online

Here.

Of-course the 2017 harvest, observations and some hints to what we might be tasting (and buying) in another 12-15 months are centre-stage.

With vintages ending in a ‘7’ in mind, a look at some ‘executive wines’ from the 1997 vintage – 20 years on. Even in a modest vintage, such things are only borderline ‘ready’ after 20 years.

Lastly a tour of Saint-Véran, it’s beautiful countryside and vineyard-scape – plus of-course one or two (88!) wines tasted.

Enjoy!

[For subscribers] A profile of Saint Amour – is that even possible? Blind tasting about 50 St.Amours is of-course no-problem, likewise visiting ten new producers. Then back to the Côte de Nuits with a sniff of Chambolle-Musigny and much more Vosne-Romanée.

Here.

june 2017 burgundy report, now online

Online today – the June 2017 Burgundy Report

Ten reports covering new and revisited domaines from Chablis to Beaujolais – the latter, a modest tasting of 34 wines from the appellation of Moulin à Vent. Normally, I aim for at least a dozen reports per month in this ‘off-season’ time – but having ‘lost’ my car for 3 weeks, it’s fair to say that the logistics were not on my side in June – but I almost made it 🙂

Particularly nice was the opportunity to visit and taste 15s with Thierry Brouin at Domaine des Lambrays – in his last days at the helm of the domaine (since 1980!) before retirement. Such a great character…

burgundy report – april 2017

The April Burgundy Report is now online.

Marsannay is in focus with a profile of its vast area and complex network of lieux-dits. The proposal for premier crus – ‘the dossier!’ – showing how it should simplify our understanding of the appellation. There’s also a blind tasting of over 50 Marsannay wines – mostly from 2014 – with some of the appellations best producers in attendance – physically as well as their bottles!

But it’s not just Marsannay; in addition to some newly profiled domaines and a bunch of familiar names visited to taste their 2015s, there are also themed blind tasting of 2015s from Chiroubles, Irancy, Mâconnais and Régnié.

All told, a little over 260 wines. I hope that you will enjoy…

Here you go.
