Travels in Burgundy 2017

a year-ending promenade in frenchie speaking switzerland

By billn on December 31, 2017 #travels in burgundy 2017

Our last day of the year took in a little tour around the Bielersee (Lac de Bienne) and stop-offs in Champagne and Avenches. I well remember the outrage of Swiss colleagues in the early 2000s when it became official that the (Swiss) town of Champagne was banned from making wine under their own name. Of-course it had no bubbles and it was 90% sold only in the canton of its birth – we all understand of-course – but try telling that to the Swiss when they can buy Emmental-Francais or Gruyère-Francais cheeses in French supermarkets!

Avenches is a small but pretty town that was once best known for it’s (still!) very impressive Roman amphitheatre – today it’s probably better known for being a large production centre for Nespresso, surrounded by fields full of buffalo for the mozzarella – oops! The High Street of Avenches is beautifully kept and has great architecture – but on this last day of the year, and a Sunday to boot, it was as dead as a very dead thing…

week 50’s ‘rogues’ gallery

By billn on December 18, 2017 #travels in burgundy 2017

Last week was also my last week of tasting in Burgundy this year – mainly ‘maisons’ for the December Report but a few not bad domaines slipped in there too. The red domaine report – i.e. the November 2017 Burgundy Report will be online in the next 48 hours…

a perfect saturday…

By billn on December 16, 2017 #travels in burgundy 2017

Almost a perfect Saturday – breakfast taken watching the passers-by in Place Carnot, a wander around the market, then a little typing followed by lunch. The afternoon saw a jaunt around Maranges, Le Rochepot and Chassagne-Montrachet – dodging the rain-showers. The evening with some Puligny Referts and Vosne Beaux Monts – plus finally something good on Netflix!

Enjoy yours too!

today’s promenade – a little vosne & a lot of vougeot

By billn on December 14, 2017 #travels in burgundy 2017

My timing was excellent – taking a mid-morning walk in both Vosne and Vougeot, because the afternoon and evening were a complete washout – very wet! I think my jogging shoes will take some time to dry out!

a little walk in criots…

By billn on December 13, 2017 #travels in burgundy 2017

A gap in the rain – but no mist! Criots has had some prunung but not much ploughing yet (buttage). It’s easy to spot the vines of Madamme Leroy with their tall posts – but such a small plot….

week 49’s ‘rogues’ gallery

By billn on December 08, 2017 #travels in burgundy 2017

A four day week this week and with two late cancellations too – too late to add something new – though space for plenty of typing. I’m still projecting 18-20 December for the 2016 Red Burgundy Report. Next week will be my last visits in the côtes this year!

Have a great weekend…

killing time in vougeot

…today with a coffee and then a little wander before an appointment in Gilly:

sharing the snow…

By billn on December 01, 2017 #travels in burgundy 2017

I think that today (apart from typing) I’m mainly re-posting pictures of snow in Burgundy! I’ve snow at home too, but in Switzerland,

I’m back to Beaune on Sunday for the last two weeks of visits this year…

Enjoy your weekend!

week 47’s ‘rogues’ gallery

By billn on November 25, 2017 #travels in burgundy 2017

Four days of visits last week – a couple of first appointment Côte de Beaune domaines, but then deep into the Côte de Nuits. The 2016 White Burgundy Report was published last week, and I’m projecting 18-20 December for the 2016 Red Burgundy Report. I’m now back in Switzerland for 10 days, so chance to get a good start on typing those reports 🙂

Have a great weekend…
