David on 2018:
2018 started very early – 31 August – but it’s a good year. The colour of the wines is very impressive – we have an average volume, plus or minus. It’s always possible that there will be two styles of wines in 2018 – those with extra grapes might not have the same ripeness.

David on 2017:
In 2017 we are happy to have made some wine! The yields were not so high, I would say late 40s (hectolitres per hectare)- like in the 1990s – compared to the 17-18 hl/ha that was our return in 2016 – we produced 60 barrels of wine in 2016, compared to 150-160 in a ‘standard’ vintage. We intentionally didn’t try to compensate the the vintages that preceded this, though we still have nearly 3 times the amount of wine.

The wines…

I so enjoyed this range. Even the tannins are so well melded. A mixed case seems a no-brainer here in 2017.

2017 Bourgogne Maison Dieu Rouge
Maison Dieu near the Château Pommard – bottled just before harvest
A little smell from the glass, but then more and more width of fresh red fruit. Hmm, layers of concentrated fruit. Long – very impressive… bravo bourgogne in just about any vintage.

2017 Beaune Epenottes
The first vines over the border with Pommard – villages section
A deeper, rounder nose – seems fine and concentrated. Fresher red fruit – more vibrant but not really more concentrated. Long, full of material – long and delicious.

2017 Beaune 1er Vignes Franches
Not yet in bottle. 1929 and 1974 plantations
Full, concentrated, here more floral. A little more structure, but melting and with a fine depth of pretty flavour. Great Beaune.

2017 Pommard
Multiple parcels, as usual, with three different types of terrior, high, those below the 1ers, and the other is like a little cone de dejection between Rugiens and the village.
A little oak on the nose but an attractive base of fruit too. Structural, but melting flavour, lots of depth to the flavour too. Plenty of oak – but also a mouthful of delicious flavour. Super wine!

2017 Pommard 1er Clos des Charmots
Really old vines from 1901 and the 1920s – ‘Usually more about finesse than rigour.’
Hmm, wide bright but deep red fruit – yes! Supple, concentrated, depth of texture – beautiful over the palate – a little saline in the finish. Supple, fine but with the power to back that up! Excellent!

2017 Pommard 1er Clos Micault
Planted in the 1960s
A vibrant, complex nose – yes! Supple again, slightly floral, depth of flavour – great – bravo! I almost always love this!
2017 Pommard 1er Clos des Arvelets
South-facing, perpendicular to the hill to avoid erosion – which means the tractor can’t get in – so all the work is done by hand
Fresh, pure and vibrant again – a clear width of pure redness. More line and drive, layered, growing in intensity. Hmm, super intensity in the middle, only slowly fading in the finish. This is delicious again – bravo!

2017 Pommard 1er Grand Epenots
Deep and vibrant, less wide, touched by oak too – but clearly also very attractive. Supple, wide – really expansive flavours. Waves of finishing flavour. Excellent.

2017 Volnay 1er Mitans
A narrower but perhaps finer certainly more airy nose. Good volume, depth of flavour, a decent structure even after the Grands Epenots, more floral finishing. Very yum!

2017 Volnay 1er Santenots
Planted in the 1960s – from dessus – ‘a little less fine but it ages really well’
Ooh – a more direct and fresh red fruit, adding florals in the glass. Fine, fresh texture, clarity, a little depth of tannin. Ooh this is super…

2017 Volnay 1er Caillerets
Dessus 2 parcels – the first vines harvested almost every year.
Bigger, more open and pure fruits. Lots of volume in the mouth, airy, architectural scale, pure fruit leaching from the walls of my mouth. Vibrant finishing, some modest tannin augmenting the texture. Long. Top!
