Remi on 2017:
The season was easier than in 2016, but I had one problem in Romanée St.Vivant – the caterpillars! Despite such a cold winter, there were so many of them – daytime caterpillars – we get the nighttime version too in Charlemagne but I’ve never seen so many – maybe 15% of the potential crop was lost I’d call it an infestation! There were a lot in Pernand too, but not like in RSV. On the other hand, it’s the first time I’ve ever seen the correct yields in my Corton-Bressandes. After so many vintages with 60% losses I decided to pull out half of the Charlemagne vines for replanting this year – despite that made more than in 2016!

“2017 is a little light vs the vintages on either side – 2016 and 2018 – and both will surely keep much longer, 2015 too. I think the reds are more consistent than the whites in 2018. but there is very similar maturity in the two white vintages though it’s too early to say exactly – today I will just say similar – but there’s more acid in 2017, that’s a difference!

The wines…

There was a group of tasters when I visited, so not much chance to get extra detail from Remi this year. The whites are good – but a little oaky – they should be fine in another year. The reds are a little lite – except for the excellent Corton-Bressandes – lite and interesting is fine for the characterful En Caradeux, but doesn’t cut it for the RSV – and I’m sure that Remi won’t be selling it cheaper. Interestingly, he did say that since he made his 2009, 10 years ago, the contract price for RSV has exactly doubled!

2017 Pernand-Vergelesses
3rd harvest, planted in 2013. ‘A young, vigorous vine – vigorous with leaf growth, but not so many grapes!’
Bright and wide, with pretty citrus notes. The palate is wide and very faintly touched by oak. Yet this is still a little mineral and shows an attractive citrus accent. Tasty wine.

2017 Corton-Charlemagne
There will be 80% new barrels in the 2018 as not enough to go around after the low volume vintages.
A touch of oak on the nose. Wide, intense, touched by oak again on the palate too – but here is vibrant flavour, lovely energy and a very fine finish. Actually this shimmers with interest into the finish.

Les Rouges:
Except in 2015 where Remi used 15% whole-clusters, all the other vintages have been destemmed.

2017 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er En Caradeux
This starts a bit reductive but with plenty of aromatic concentration too – swirling releases dark-red, beautifully pure fruit. Touched on the palate by the reduction but not too much. Long, wide and open. Not particularly concentrated but tasty and quite open.

2017 Corton-Bressandes
14.8° on the 2nd Sept 2018 in Corton-Bressandes!
Plenty of colour. A big nose – open and with excellent depth. Hmm, depth, energy, growing fresh-fruited intensity. Wide and super finishing – a great finish. Excellent wine!

2017 Romanée St.Vivant
The nose here starts tight but does grow more and more floral with some swirling effort – the last drops in the glass remain recalcitrant. Hmm, a nice depth of flavour here, complex, mobile, though with modest concentration – yet long and very tasty. A little finishing tannin. It’s RSV-lite tonight!
