1999 Potel Nicolas Volnay En Chevret

By billn on March 03, 2011

Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose shows a hint of maturity, layers of aroma cover a tighter core of dark fruit – a little Pommard in style – then below are flashed of pure dark fruit. In the mouth, there’s super balance and plenty of intensity from the still-young flavours. I’d say the palate needs another 3 or 4 years to similar maturity to the nose. Lots of complexity here – drunk far too quickly to be honest!

1999 Rebourgeon-Mure Pommard Grands Epenots

Beautiful aromas ; depth, some tobacco, soft but detailed fruit with a hint of caramel. Some sweetness, still some tannin but everything is secondary to the sweet core of ripe fruit. Long too. There’s more than a suggestion of maturity to this beautiful wine.

The aromas are fresh, young and herby before plumbing a ripe red depth. Very fine tannin again – like the last wine – but a bigger mid-palate burst of interest before it slowly fades into the finish.

1999 Vaudoisey-Creusefond Pommard Les Epenots

Deep, dark oak-influenced fruit aromas. Almost silky despite the quantity of tannin. The very dark fruit flavour doesn’t excite me but it’s both concentrated and long.

1999 Violot-Guillemard Christophe Pommard Les Epenots

To start the fruit aromas are a little diffuse, slowly it tightens to deliver an extra concentration of red berries – okay I’m smitten. Mouth-filling velvet tannin. The fruit is dark and primary.

1999 Rion Daniel Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts

Medium, medium plus colour. The nose starts with a waft of dark, dank, slightly reduced, earthy toast that fades to be replaced with a slowly building crescendo of dark and impressive cherry fruit. Good, perhaps slightly lifted acidity abets the mid-palate intensity and length. The fruit in the mid-palate has a nice high-toned impression and the lingering note of the finish is stony/mineral. Acid-o-philes will like this a lot, I did!

1999 l'Arlot Nuits St.Georges Clos des Fôrets St.Georges

By billn on April 29, 2010

The cork shows sign of some seepage. Medium-plus and quite young in colour. The nose is right from l’Arlot’s more gothic implementation of stems – it’s a bit harsh and imposing, not quite what I’d call perfume – there’s also a strong mineral element that veers towards, without ever quite matching, the vintage character of 2004. Aromatically it’s a mixed bag then. In the mouth it’s intense, brooding and shows very good acidity. The tannin only comes a little to the fore in the mid-palate and onwards. It’s also quite long finishing. There’s a little cohesion missing though the individual parts seem good – I don’t think I caught it on a good day…

1999 Jadot Louis Beaune Les Teurons

Medium, medium-plus colour – and quite young looking colour at that! The nose has minerality, tar and eventaully candied red berries. Real intensity and mouth-watering acidity define the wine today, yet there is a hint of fat before the acidity takes over, that dissuades you from chewing to inspect the tannin! Long, mineral flavours with and edge of sweetness. Drinkable but très young!

1999 Coste-Caumartin Pommard Clos des Boucherottes

Warm, comforting red fruit aromas. Fresh fruit across the palate, not too ripe and well balanced to the structure. A nice dimension of dried berry fruit and lovely. lovely length. I like this a lot!
