Very sad news …

21.3.2025billn

Last weekend, we lost Marko de Morey – a long-time contributor to Burgundy Report.

His acerbic observations on the harvests – at multiple domaines over multiple years – made him a great favourite here.

Mark was a friend, so I am shocked to learn he has left us.

I fondly remember his combative personality – which I’m sure was apparent to all in his writings – but also his love of Burgundy – not just the wines but the place and the people too.

For many well-known names in the UK (Burgundy) wine trade, he was also their Bank Manager – retired 3-4 years now – his ire about some of those traders that he helped out, who would in later years no-longer allocate him a bottle of Roumier could light up a room and warm your hands with its incandescence – and that was also the fun of Mark – as, to cool off, we sipped something from Lafon instead 🙂

I will miss him dearly…

Agree? Disagree? Anything you'd like to add?

I feel completely gutted… I was just this morning thinking of him and wondering whether he would continue his report on the 2024 vintage… Now I know why my past few emails went unanswered…
Mark Gough was a fairly unique character even via e-mail. Over the past decade, as we were writing back and forth about all things Burgundy, we fairly quickly found common ground over our dislike of the trade and how it has affected the region.
Much to my lament, we never actually got together despite several attempts. Our agendas never quite aligned sufficiently to make that happen. It will serve me as a reminder to seize the day, if nothing else.
My heartfelt condoleances go out to his wife and daughter. Rest in peace, Mark. You will be sorely missed by many around the w.w.w.w. (add “wine” somewhere in there).

Like Mike T, I regularly shared emails with Mark. He gave me good advice about Burgundy and put me on to this site. I did meet him a few times. In addition, thanks to his generous nature he sold me some mature Burgundies from his cellar at a price I could afford. He knew my budget was pretty poor, and thanks to him I experienced wines I would never have otherwise.

Sadly, he was coming to my home next weekend to bring two more I had bought from him, and I was looking forward to a chat with him.

We also shared a love for Liverpool FC

    Sad loss

It was with great sadness that I learnt yesterday of Mark’s passing. I had known Mark for well over a decade from our gatherings in York. I think you joined us Bill in 2019 for one such, when the late Simon Beatty was also in the company. On that occasion Mark treated us to an Echezeaux 2002 (may even have been Grands Echezeaux) from Rene Engel. Such was his generosity. Like many of us caught by the Burgundy bug he had an infectious enthusiasm. I well remember his enthusiasm for being in Burgundy to work the vendange and well recorded on this website. It is wonderful that you have posted the account from his most recent 2024 vendange. Opened a bottle of Lafon Meursault Charmes 2010 last night. I think Mark would have approved, absolutely no argument! Mark, I hope you have now truly found that ethereal bottle of Burgundy. RIP, Mark.
