2005 Barthod, Bourgogne Rouge
Medium, medium-plus cherry-red. Slightly volatile and high-toned, but these notes mainly disappear with swirling to leave a deeper, cream-edged base – it’s then quite impressive. Fresh in the mouth, dense and slightly furry with very good fruit that follows through into the finish. Very impressive – average 2004 villages quality here – but I’d still mainly drink over the next 2-3 years.

PS Unlike the Chambolle, this wine still shows a high level of value…

By no means direct comment on Barthod but I’m getting very little fun out of any 05s at the moment. Some 05 Digioia-Royers openened recently ranged from backward to darn-right worrying. I’d be very interested in your take if you’ve picked any of these up?

Seriously I do hold to idea that many 05’s already had their early peak of enjoyment – so it will be interesting to see how the new group of purchasers attracted to the vintage’s rave reviews will react. More of that in the new report.

Thanks for the note. I’m just a little surprised by your conclusion that this is a wine for drinking over the next two or three years. We’ve recently tasted the 90 and 99 (reasonably comparable vintages I’d have thought)here at various offlines and dinners and both were still going strong. The 99 is still a little on the young side and the 90 perhaps might have been a little too old, but my point is that the producer generally makes a style that demands and repays ageing even at this level. Why should this be any different in 2005? Or is this just a case of different strokes for different folks?
BTW I have a case of this so am more than just academically interested….

I also have a case of the 99 – well about 9 bottles left from it. The style here is, despite a step-up in density, softer and more approachable than 99 – and that combined with just how pretty it was, just made me think that it would be more rewarding young. If I had a case, I would probably drink 8 or nine in that timeframe – assuming it didn’t tighten – the other 3 or 4 would be for academic interest. If it did tighten, I’d take that as a stronger signal to age it…

I might well take your advice, as it looks like there is going to be a dearth of early drinking 2005’s.
How does the 04 compare with the o5 Bourgogne? I liked the 03 a lot but sold out and 05 is not in the market yet. Should I wait?

Sorry I don’t remember tasting the 2004 – I have some 04 Chambolle in storage, but that will also remain untested until February…
For many 04’s I would wait a while to see if the herbacious aromas subside – though this wine could already be free of those…

I had the 2004 in magnum last Friday. It is delicious, delicate, fragrant and drinking very well at the moment. Where else can you get Burgundy of this class, at this price? I bought more on Monday to keep me going until the 2005 arrives.
I plan to drink the next magnum on boxing day.

Hmm – I don’t remember seeing magnums. I did get some 05 mags of the de Croix bourgogne – still not yet collected though.

Lately I bought a lot of the 03 Bourgogne, Bertagna recommended by Bill and all my friends like this one a lot!
Just this last weekend 2-10-08 I opened a bottle of 05 Arnoux Chamboll A/C and a bottle of the Dujac chambolle-musigny A/C. Bothe were in the $50 range hear in the US.
It was interesting to compair styles of the two producers but I must say on the second day the Arnoux 05 chambolle was the best young chambolle village wine I ever tasted. The first day was tight but after 24 hours in the refigrator after being opened up it was beautiful. Arnoux did a fabulous job with his 2005 reds but I will probally not open another one for five years. Just top notch quality hear.
The 05 Dujac was also good but in a more new world style with bigger friut. The Arnoux chambolle was more classic and percise with excellent balance. Still thinking about it now as I am writting this.

Try again Wolfgang, where it says ‘Merchant Location:’ change it to Europe. No German, but you have Swiss and Belgian answers…
