Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

Signs of seepage under the capsule, but nothing untoward in the way the wine presented itself. Deep cherry red. The nose starts with tons of black cherry depth, but it’s primary and there’s not much else, perhaps a little high toned red fruit and mint – okay perhaps there is more… Not much fat but super concentration. The tannin is well behaved – no astringency – and good acidity. With food there seems a bit of a gap in the mid-palate, otherwise you don’t notice. Medium, medium-plus length. I enjoyed this wine plenty.

Medium ruby red. From a rather powdery red fruit beginning the nose slowly takes on more interest and depth – though not obviously Vosne like the Beaumonts – kirsch, a little plum and cherry. The palate is fresh with tasty medium concentrated fruit. The wood is not that well integrated giving plenty of grain and a bitter edge to the finish – more-so than the 2000. Improves with aeration. This will also be a very nice wine, but needs keeping a little longer than the 2000, despite not seeming so concentrated.

An aged colour of medium-plus browning amber. Not too much spice on the nose, but plenty of sous bois and turned earth. Unlike some of the younger vintages which are very, very concentrated, the wine puts in a very elegant performance. The tannins are resolved, the acidity is good and there is the silky texture that only a good Burgundy can deliver. A treat!

Again very deep colour. More oak on the nose than any of the previous wines. Still, there is smooth cherry pie behind this oak. Lots of volume in the mouth, and lots of tannin to – but quite silky. Nice acidity and very long.

Medium-plus cherry colour. Softer than the last Pommard. Medium tannins the acidity pushes lovely fruit very long into the finish. This is very nice.

Deep ruby colour, more mature looking than anticipated. Some high toast oak though not overpowering, behind it there is cherry, ‘mixed spice’ and coffee. In the mouth, very smooth though oaky. Good acidity and still some tannin, though quite refined. There is cherry fruit and a particularly long vanilla crème finish. Provided over the next 5+ years it puts on a bit more weight in the mid-palate, this will be exceptionally good.
