Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

1990 Drouhin Joseph Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

Deeply coloured – still. The nose is super, wide, faintly spicy and complex – tobacco notes and an impression (in the mind) first of brown but slowly changing to red. At the same time the nose slowly becomes softer with sweeter spice. In the mouth my first impression is ’size’ – this is big – followed by plenty of dry tannin. There is quite enough concentration to buffer the tannin, and this concentration really expands on the palate. It’s hardly elegant, but it’s very impressive. I would say this is aromatically excellent and quite ‘ready’, but the palate trails behind, needing at least another 5 years in the cellar. A super bottle.

Medium ruby-red colour. The nose starts quite high-toned and a little creamy before going through a mineral and earthy stage with flashes of red fruit then bonfire – you need a little patience, but there is just so much dimension to be found – bravo. The entry and mid-palate start a little disappointing after the previous wine but minute by minute the palate opens wider and wider. The finish is very good and whilst the tannins are a little grainy but they are ripe and grab the mouth and help cement the flavours of the finish. Slow to blossom, but excellent and pips the previous wine.

2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

From a grower with whom BP&F have a long-term contract, 6 or 7 barrels worth. The nose is a little understated; faint cinnamon tops warm, creamy-red fruit of quite some depth. Christophe Bouchard pointed out a little extra dried currant on the nose which he described as indicative of ‘vendanges entier’ where after pressing the last few grams of sugar ferment in the barrel. The palate has a sweet entry and is concentrated with good acidity and plenty of tannin – velvetty – with a very long, lingering finish.

Medium colour, still just a trace of cherry-red. Spice on the wide nose, which develops beautifully in the glass – dried red fruits and intense cherry. The palate never-quite lives up to the nose; good texture and an extra edge of concentration on the mid-palate and finish – a finish that slowly fades with a little grain on the tannin showing up. Today, this is half a great wine.

Medium ruby-red. The nose is a wide and complex mix of powdery red cherry and interesting green/herbal spicy notes. Medium weight at best, but has good balance, well-mannered tannins and a very pretty lingering finish. A very pleasant bottle that offers good value, but definitely 2nd class vs the best from this vintage.

1998 Arnoux Robert Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

Purer and denser nose than the 98 Corvées Pagets, higher toned too. The palate is fresh and is one of those crescendo wines that builds with intensity. Still primary but very, very long and understated – I’m quite impressed by this.

Medium-plus colour without much fading. The nose starts high-toned with powdery red fruit, becomes a little smokey with coffee overtones. The palate has excellent intensity to the fruit with good, slightly grainy tannin and good acidity. This is a very good wine that still shows quite a lot of oak effect on the palate but will be very fine.

1999 l'Arlot Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

Medium colour that fades to salmon pink at the rim. The nose starts with an almost overwhelming smokey note – there’s sweet red berries and strawberry too – even after an hour in the glass the smoke is still there though on a lower level, reminds me of Dujac’s ’95 Clos de la Roche. Fat and sweet with a very silky mouthfeel and little noticeable tannin. The finish is a long one that’s redolent of the smokey nose. Quite an individual wine and one that I’ll be really interested to follow the development.

A wine that followed the ’96 Drouhin Musigny and despite that, a very good showing. The colour is medium red, halfway between between cherry and ruby. The nose eventually becomes a lovely blend of sweet red and black fruit following ~40 minutes of so-so performance. Nicely concentrated and complex fruit of interesting and mouthwatering expression. The acidity is good and the tannins are a little grainy – but none of the astringency of some ’98’s. The finish is mouthwatering and quite long too. Very nice wine without a doubt.
