Nuits St.Georges

2003 Leroy Nuits St.Georges

Deep cherry-red. The nose is dense, tight and toasty, only slowly opening but in doing so hints at the same intense floral note of the 04 Bourgogne. Lots of action on the palate, perhaps caused by the petillance. The tannins are much more noticeable though not astringent. This is a very nice wine but it’s hard to see the value.

Medium, medium-plus cherry-red. The nose soars with red cherry fruit, nice depth too. Fresh, forward acidity that provides a lift to the finish – nicely mouthwatering. A trace of tartness to the fruit, but chilled, this will be lovely summer drinking. Pure and fresh, only the acidity closely avoids rusticity but it’s got a super nose.

Bottled in September. From a south-facing slope very close to Les Argillières. The nose is also a little tight, though pure cherry fruit is evident. In the mouth there’s a darker aspect to the presentation – very good tannins and fine acidity. There’s lots of material here – a very high quality villages.

2003 Thomas Charles Nuits St.Georges

Medium-plus cherry red. The nose is a mix rubber and sulfur. The sweet palate shows grainy tannin but becomes quite interesting from the mid-palate onwards – unfortunately I didn’t like the nose or the entry…

1999 Potel Nicolas Nuits St.Georges

Medium, medium-plus cherry-red colour. The nose has high tones and a slightly jammy red fruit core. The palate is much more sedate than the wall of tannin that greeted me when I first tasted this on release. The palate has really good intensity that slowly fades. Good acidity and well mannered tannins. I just find that following the burst of fruit at the start and the good length I’d like a bit more in the middle, but it’s nicely sweet and was heartily devoured.

2000 Château Gris Nuits St.Georges

Medium cherry-red colour. The nose is high toned with diffuse cherry notes. On the palate the fruit is almost good, but the acidity sticks out a little. The finish is quite interesting, but overall needs a bit more interest to re-purchase.

1998 Potel Nicolas Nuits St.Georges

A wine that took a little time for me to warm to, but it was worth the wait. Medium cherry red colour. The nose starts very uncouth, high toned and alcoholic. It takes over a hour from opening (no decanting) to start showing a high-toned, fresh and piercing red fruit nose. From the start the palate was fresh, round, nicely concentrated and had very pleasant tannins – a little grain, but not particularly drying. Creamy fruit on the finish too. Next time I’d decant for an hour – otherwise wait two or three years.

1998 Gouges Henri Nuits St.Georges

Medium cherry-red. The nose starts a little subdued, but given time there’s a high toned sweet note – almost blueberry – eventually a little spice too. Initially the palate starts a little disappointing and thin, though the tannins are smooth and the acidity’s good. Given 90 minutes the palate fattens up some. There’s a nice purity to the fruit though the medium finish never loses a slight bitter aspect. If I hadn’t given this some time to open up I’d have to say this pales next to the following wine, but it’s well balanced so I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.
