2008 Roy Marc Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

Bottled in August. Dark, fruit-driven aromas, little oak. There’s plenty of dimension and energy. Fine wine this and no overt oak.

2008 Gambal Alex Vosne-Romanée Vieilles Vignes

A little more aromatic width and the volume of spice is turned up to a Vosne vernacular. Despite gas on the palate, you can see that this is rounder, softer and fatter than the Savigny, just a hint more tannin too. Also a good length.

The aromas are deep and dark, mixing earth and dark cherry. In the mouth there’s an additional dimension of flavour versus the Gevrey VV. Lots of interest and a very good finish too.

Tight aromatics, but there are glimpses of the concentrated core of fruit. Seems more acid-forward than the Vosne, but there’s more gas so it’s tough to say. Finishes very well though…

2008 Roy Marc Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Alexandrine

Medium-plus purple colour. There are faint herbs and glossy but understated fruit on the nose. Very supple, silky tannin and an excellent mid-palate explosion of flavour. The flavour lingers very well. Not perhaps a grand cru standard, but definitely better than ‘villages’ standard. Excellent!

2008 Gambal Alex Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes

More aromatic impact than the villages; soft, round and with a more floral dimension. In the mouth there’s more tannin, a linear stance and a clear extra intensity. High-toned flavours that insinuate themselves into the cavities of your mouth – very nice!

2008 Prieur Jacques Volnay Santenots

Herb aromas mix with dark fruits. You can taste the herbs on the palate too, mixed with dark cherry fruits and lovely acidity. Vibrant and long. Very pretty wine.

2008 Gambal Alex Clos de Vougeot

Here the aromas are complex and quite lovely; slightly warm and not too dense. On your tongue there is width coupled to minerality, fine acidity and an impressive, slowly fading length. Fresh personality and certainly a ‘keeper’.

2008 Prieur Jacques Beaune Les Grèves

By billn on April 14, 2010

Dark, less sweet aromas, perhaps a faint menthol in the background. Ripe, sweet fruit flavours that offer a perfect buffer to the acidity. Certainly some power and intensity here. Quite a big Beaune.
