2007

2007 Tremblay Cécile Echézeaux Du-Dessus

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

100% of the stems retained during the fermentation, it’s been assembled for 1 month, but is still not in bottle. Beautiful fruit on the nose, which is wide but also shows depth and focus – hauntingly good as a beacon of pure red emerges. Width and grainy tannin on the palate that clings to the mouth – but in doing so it adheres flavour so that the finish is even longer. Stands out both for its individuality and complexity – excellent.

2007 Long-Depaquit Chablis La Moutonne

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

Very faint brioche and a linear note of worthy depth. MOre savoury but very intense. The width quickly fades after a short mid-palate burst, but lingers very well.

2007 Terres d'Arômes Bourgogne 'Cave 18'

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

The name is a little fun – the stocks of Claire’s wines are held in ‘area 18’ in the cellars at Laboure-Roi, but Claire also thought the name was quite nice, in the manner of ‘Bin 28’ – I must remember to bring her a bottle next time! The old (a mix of 50 and 80 years-old) vines, despite being sited in an old vineyard in the area of Beaune are only classed as ‘regional’, that said, they ripen very early and in 2007 were some of the cleanest fruit the team worked with. Good colour. The nose starts in a pronounced floral way, slowly changing in the glass to offer more ‘straight-forward’ red fruits and eventually a nice, soft caramel aspect. A slightly soft entry with interesting fruit and a nice balance. Interesting and worthy bourgogne if well priced.

2007 Faiveley Joseph Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

Medium, medium-plus colour. Slightly herbal araomas. In the mouth there’s a higher level of concentration and intensity. It’s starting to show some sous-bois and savoury notes. A little bitter chocolate on the finish and plenty of astringency that clings to your gums. Certainly quite interesting, but way too young.

2007 Arnoux Robert Vosne-Romanée Les Hautes Maizières

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

The nose shows some higher tones and herbal elements underpinned qwith pretty fruit. More concentrated and showing finer tannin than the ‘Vosne’, though much less tasty today. Again, very well crafted and no obvious oak.

2007 Gerbet Marie–Andrée et Chantal Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

There’s more depth of fruit on the nose after the ‘basic’ Vosne. Again the fruit profile is sweet, though this label wears a little more tannin and excitement in the mid-palate. Similar length of finish, but here the flavour shows a little more barrel today. Very good.

2007 Gros Frère & Soeur Grands-Echézeaux

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

The nose his nice depth, but less width than the Echézeaux. Intense with some slightly savoury flavours – also the acidity seems a little tart. Good length, but versus many other wines here – probably not worth the tariff.

2007 Terres d'Arômes Volnay Champans

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

The colour is medium, medium-plus cherry red with a faint purple rim. When first opened, there’s deep scent of faintly musky dark fruit, slowly the muskiness fades and the dark cherry moves to the fore, even accented by creaminess. More and more the nose fills and rounds out with higher tones – despite the dark fruit profile it’s a very elegant and lovely nose. In the mouth there’s very fine tannin that adds a little texture, fresh acidity and fruit that really imposes itself only from the mid-palate – but it widens nicely and has good depth.

2007 Bichot Albert Puligny-Montrachet

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

A tiny whiff of SO2 but the nose is wide and very pretty. Ripe and round with super acidity – the slightly creamy fruit has a totally different character to the group of Chablis. Lingers very well.
