1996 Castagnier Guy Clos de Vougeot

By on August 31, 2006 #asides

Medium, medium-plus ruby-red. The nose is wild and interesting; savoury and fecund maybe even a licorice edge, yet there is tight core of red fruit too that will need more time to fully blossom. This wine shows the most tannin of the 4 Castagniers, faintly drying but leaving a fine, soft coating on your teeth. Really intense, the concentration does a great job of balancing the acidity. The palate is quite backward though perhaps not so much as the Bonnes-Mares. A super nose, the palate just needs another 3-5 years to catch up. Will be super.

1996 Bourée Pierre Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Clos de la Justice

By on June 30, 2006 #asides

Medium-pale ruby-red core moving through salmon to clear at the rim – looks delicate. The nose is anything but delicate – like its younger sibling this has a very forward presentation – intense red confiture surrounded by much interest, plenty of stem aspects too. Has a very lithe stance – typical of many from 1996 – super acidity and very silky tannins. Certainly no need to rush your drinking, but this was a lovely bottle today.

1996 Grivot Jean Nuits St.Georges Lavières

Medium-plus ruby-red, fading to salmon-pink. The nose is high toned and a little diffuse, just an edge of caramel perhaps. Smooth, with some concentration and way above average length for a villages, but ends just a little ‘wishy-washy’ – I wouldn’t say that the acidity dominates, but given another 5 year, it might.

1996 Barthod Ghislaine Chambolle-Musigny

At last, a good bottle from this case, the first was all bottle-stink and the second had sulfur which had fixed in the wine. Medium-plus ruby-red. Very interesting nose, deep and meaty, a hint of gun-flint and occasional flashes of piercingly lovely red berry fruits. Great texture, there’s still some tannin, but it’s very fine. Like most 96’s there is an obviously fresh complexion from the acidity but there’s enough red-berry fruit to balance it out – it will, however, always remain acid-forward, though the balance will see it live for many years to come – certainly no rush over the next 10! Very enjoyable.

1996 Château Perruchot Meursault Charmes

By on February 28, 2006 #asides

Medium golden. The aromatics start high-toned before closing to tight core of caramel-edged honey. Bright with fresh acidity, and a nice punch of fruity intensity with a hint of fat but no trace of heavyness. The finish is subdued, though reasonably long. A terrific bargain-bin purchase with many years ahead of it.

1996 Gallois Dominique Charmes-Chambertin

Deep ruby-red. The nose is real mix; a hint of ash, pencil lead and faint meaty notes over a core of blackcurrant. The blackcurrant, black fruit edge continues on the palate – almost confiture – but you have to wait about 45 minutes before it comes into focus, medium length. The acidity is well-balanced and the tannin quite subdued – primary fruit though – still needs a few years. Tasty.

1996 Romanée-Conti La Tâche

By on October 31, 2005 #asides

The deepest colour yet – looks quite old though with its mahogany colour and browning rim. The nose is a little gamey and still shows some mushroom – but this time much more subtle – together with high tones and jammy red fruit. Beautiful texture and weight in the mouth. This is the first wine with such volume. There is again a crescendo effect as you savour the wine, the finish being of bitter chocolate coated red fruits. Still a rasp to the tannins and lovely acidity. Very classy.

1996 Boisset Jean-Claude Pouilly-Fuisse

By on October 31, 2005 #asides

Medium golden colour. The nose is sweet, some high-tones, quite pleasant. Super acidity, good intensity and medium length. A lovely refreshing drink and no rush to finish – surprisingly good.

1996 Serafin Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Cazetiers

Vs the 1995 a little nicer texture to the tannins, but otherwise a very similar wine – drunk after many others so no real note.
