1996 Rion Daniel Nuits St.Georges Les Vignes Rondes

By on October 31, 2004 #asides

Wow – what a wine! A very deep and young looking colour. The nose has high tones over a meaty base. This wine assaults the palate with massive fruit concentration, but the acidity of the vintage manages to provide a modicum of balance. There is little tannin and a medium-plus finish. I’d still leave it for a couple of years, but if you don’t mind obliterating the taste of your food – try one now.

1996 Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Varoilles

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Medium ruby red, just a trace of amber at the rim. Not as high-toned as many and no spice, but the red cherry comes through just like the others from this vineyard. Concentrated with fresh acidity and good tannins – in fact lovely concentration. The finish doesn’t linger as long as the ’97 Varoilles but this is very much my preferred style.

1996 Drouhin Joseph Griotte-Chambertin

Medium ruby colour. The nose shows a little more wood than any other wine here, but there’s also a deep, deep fruit compote to fall into. The palate has superbly concentrated red fruit with excellent acidity for balance. Fine tannins and a long finish. This is excellent and a long way from the start of its mature phase – needs at least another 5 years.

1996 Thomas-Moillard Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Deep ruby, lightens a little at the rim. The nose shows a blast of fruit – more plum than cherry. There’s real depth, more than many from this vineyard, but perhaps not the width or expanse (if you prefer) of the best. The palate has perfect acidity and smooth but sneaky tannin that creeps up on you. There’s good intensity to the fruit, but it’s perhaps a little one dimensional – same with the finish. An enjoyable wine – I enjoyed it to the last drop – but it’s missing a little of what Malconsorts can offer, or at least at this obviously young age it is.

1996 Engel René Vosne-Romanée

Medium ruby colour fading very little to the rim. The nose is pure, characteristic Vosne, starting with a touch of undergrowth, deep spicy notes, a touch of black fruit and slowly developing, eventually dominating, raspberry. The palate is very fresh from the forward acidity, showing reasonably concentrated red cherry fruit – still quite primary. The tannins finish with a little unintrusive grain and the finish is almost good. Without showing real fat, the wine is still mouthfilling and obviously some way from maturity. I’ll try the next in another couple of years – good wine.

1996 Gros Michel Vosne-Romanée Clos des Réas

Medium-plus with no fading again well integrated oak and fruit shaded to black. Less forward and firmer than 1997. Very good acidity and well mannered tannins – very young still.

1996 Barthod Ghislaine Chambolle-Musigny

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

Deep ruby – just fading a little. A lovely nose of focused red cherry overlaying candied red fruits. Concentrated fruit on the palate with smooth, very 1996, acidity and well hidden tannins. It doesn’t have the fat it showed 3 years ago, but is still some way from maturity. Very good villages.

1996 Dujac Morey St.Denis Blanc

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

Deep golden colour. The nose is deep and fat with lanolin and and getting close to a gunflint note. The palate is equally big and robust – this is a wine that takes no prisoners. Not amazing length but nicely balanced and quite involving. Drinking very well now, a very good wine.

1996 Jadot Louis Clos de Vougeot

By on June 30, 2003 #asides

Deep colour. Nose is black cherry with soil and fallen leaves. The palate has prominent furry tannins and very good acidity. The fruit is incredibly intense black cherry, in fact almost sour cherries. Very long too, though still very young. This wine is more structured and primary than most 2000’s and I wouldn’t touch another for 4-5 years. Excellent potential.
