2007 Bachelet Denis Côte de Nuits Villages

By billn on February 25, 2010

Medium colour. The nose starts a little ‘thin’, but quickly fills out with a mix of red and blue shaded fruit and there’s a width of higher tones, no bass-notes though. A balanced and slightly floral impression with an impressive width, though like the nose there’s a limited depth for the life of this bottle. The fruit impression does build a lovely red, cream inflected note. This becomes very tasty indeed. A pretty wine that was once a great value cuvée – currently it’s just pretty…

2007 Colin-Morey Pierre-Yves St.Aubin Le Blanc

By billn on February 25, 2010

Opened a little too cold, there is only a little well judged toast aroma. As it warms in the glass it expends with an undertow of cream and hints of citrus. Fresh, waxy-smooth and, aided by a kick of smooth acidity it is intense and flavourful in the mid-palate. I like this a lot – it wasn’t particularly cheap for a villages St.Aubin at 33 Swiss francs, but it is a far from cheap performance. I’d drink these young to enjoy the mix of suppleness and and structure. Lovely.

2007 Bouchard Père et Fils Monthelie

A bright and beautiful medium colour. More intense aromas of crushed berries. Just a little more plush, with intense fresh fruits. Good acidity. A shiny clarity to this wine – lovely.

2007 Bouchard Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin

Medium colour. Some width, high-toned, eventually a little red fruit peaks through with a floral backing. I’m almost surprised by the sweetness of the fruit. Some slight astringency and decent acidity. Not the pure focus of the previous wines, but nor should there be. Good.

2007 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault Les Clous

The nose shows a more intense mineral/fruit mix – quite high-toned. Lovely width and dimension, the intensity digs into you – a wine with great energy. Lovely.

2007 Giroud Camille Vosne-Romanée

By on November 30, 2009 #asides

Fermented with 40% whole clusters and bottled in June 2009. A bright, medium cherry-red. Medium intensity friut-forward aromatics and understated Vosne spice. This has more dimension and fuller texture versus the Bourgogne. Very good balance, a slight rasp to the tannin though again just a little subverting CO2. Long finishing. Very good.

2007 Bouchard Père et Fils Mercurey

High-toned, very pretty cherry aromas with a relatively understated oak-spice component. Jammy, it’s a fruit preserve impression. Good acidity and a slightly more grown-up stance in the mid-palate. The tannin has a slight grain. This medium length wine is actually quite tasty – a second glass? – why not!

2007 Lignier-Michelot Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes

By on November 30, 2009 #asides

Medium cherry-red. Rather more depth of toasty oak than I think necessary for a Chambolle – particularly a villages wine – it may have been okay for 2005/2006, but the precocious, friendly 07s just don’t need that much. There’s even a trace of reduction so I decanted; about an hour is needed to lift most of the dark oak/reduction. Width develops and the fruit remains quite dark, it’s not quite what I’m looking for from a Chambolle though – that said, the last drops in the glass smell very pretty indeed. Good texture and actually a very nice intensity, good acidity and an impressive extra dimension of flavour – it’s very nice and shows good length. Just a shame about the oak, it spoils for me the early drinking potential of the wine.
