2008

2008 Belland Roger Criots Bâtard-Montrachet

Understated. The nose has some density but remains rather tight. Silky, ever-widening in the mouth – the intensity grows in tandem. Actually it still grows for a while after you swallow. Super, super length.

Ardea sealed and these things are frankly a pain in the arse to remove. Medium-plus purple-rimmed colour. The nose starts dense and unyielding but very quickly develops a dark macerating fruit aroma, then slowly evolves, adding dimension with beautiful high-toned berries – they take on an exquisite almost jellied dimension. I think I am in the presence of greatness – but before getting carried away, let’s taste. Silky, but it’s pure sinew and muscle, there’s not an ounce of fat. There is plenty of acidity but the flavours it helps introduce are incredibly intense and long lasting – those flavours start as essence of fruit and end as rocks. I dare say that I could really bore you with a long list of adjectives if I follow it for a couple of hours – but I only need five minutes to confirm what the nose suggested: I’m in the presence of greatness.

2008 Remoissenet Père et Fils Clos de Vougeot

After the 2007 there are more immediate and finer red fruit aromas. I love the width and the relative lack of padding. Very long and understated. Super.

2008 Chandon de Briailles Corton Bressandes

The nose is soft and shows some smoky stems, it keeps changing, showing some lovely red berries. Full, very round with good structure to underpin it – indeed the acidity is quite in the background.

2008 Chapuis Maurice Corton-Charlemagne

Again slightly savoury aromas. Full and quite fat – the acidity is quite late to show itself, despite that your mouth waters in the finish – and it’s a long mineral finish.

2008 Meuneveaux Corton Perrières

Medium colour. Fine, fresh and very pretty aromas. Wide, slightly plush, showing very good flavour combinations and a growing intensity in the mid-palate. Approachable and showing nice length, a mid-weight, well-balanced Corton – very tasty.

2008 Croix (des) Corton-Charlemagne

Medium yellow. The nose starts with a width of Charlemagne herbs, slowly but surely taking on a warmer, slightly heady orchard blossom aroma. Start drinking when it’s too cold and this is certainly not a Charlemagne of instant impact, rather it builds both concentration and intensity in the mouth. In the mid-palate there is GC extract and intensity that fades on beautiful acidity. Silky understatement but considerable length, no extraneous inputs, just pure wine. Yum!

2008 Roche de Bellene Clos St.Denis

By billn on June 30, 2010

The nose is more understated than I would like – mainly because the little it offers is gorgeous. In the mouth this doesn’t have the impact of the Clos de la Roche but like the nose the fruit flavours are to die for. Just a hint of minerality to the finish.

2008 Roche de Bellene Clos de Vougeot

Very different aromas versus the last wines – a much darker impression of fruit. Not austere but there is a higher level of ‘managed’ structure. The flavours have a floral dimension. I find it imposing yet, at the same time, slightly aloof. A nice challenge!
