Belland Roger

2008 Belland Roger Santenay Gravières

Higher-toned redder fruits, perhaps riper too. The same structure as the ‘Comme’ but more flavour to buffer it – even an extra dimension of flavour in the finish – very nice!

Blanc. There’s a nicely, Chassagne nose with that slightly herbal backdrop. There is richness and some lovely acidity to match – the 2008 formula – I like the length, this is very nice indeed.

Depth, width and seemingly almost a texture to the nose. Fuller, everything is ‘extra’ versus the previous wines; flavour, balance, structure. This decays with less obvious flavour than the Gravières, but no less length.

Medium ruby-red. The red fruit on the nose shows more depth than for the bourgogne. This is certainly a mouth-filler, it’s not elegant but it provides an exciting ride into a decent finish. Rustic, but great fun.

Medium colour. Higher-toned aromatics, again with a red fruit dimension. In the mouth this is a little more controlled, but there’s still plenty of action, including a burst of interest in the mid-palate before fading into the finish.

Medium colour. A ripe strawberry nose. Just another extra edge of refinement but without loss of intensity. This really clings to the side of your mouth and lingers impressively. I bought some.

Medium cherry-red colour. The nose is rather understated, but very well-knit. Again we step up in elegance despite some grain to the tannin. Very respectable finishing. A very nice wine.

This shows a dense and concentrated nose, part of that concentration is a mineral aspect. Intense in the mouth with good acidity. This displays a super mid-palate and length, you’d never guess Santenay, it’s quite ‘big’ but lovely.

A cork amalgum seal. Richly coloured. A super nose – immediately dark and wide with a faint twist of dark oak, then in an instant has lovely red-edged fruit and a dried cranberry note – yum. The palate is actually much more acid-forward than when tasted in November – it’s a harder drink now. I chose to leave it stoppered for 2 days (actually I didn’t plan 2 days, but I was ‘out’ the following night!); on the third day the aromatics still deliver with just a hint of lactic but very nice – more importantly the balance on the tongue has improved a lot. This was a good buy, but will really need at least 8-10 years of slumber.
