Medium yellow. The nose starts sweet, heavy and a little soapy. Very good density for a bourgogne with a ripe sweetness on the palate – quite a bit of material here. The finish is reasonably long but there’s a hint of something oxidised – almost like a sweet 10 year-old! Two hours after opening there’s no trace of that oxidised note and the wine is excellent for it’s level. Excellent bourgogne, but I’d be just a little concerned by that opening impression so wouldn’t leave them hanging around in the cellar too long.
2002
2002 Girardin Vincent Bourgogne Emotion de Terroirs
Medium gold colour. A sweet, slightly honied nose. The honey is there on the palate too, only in accent though. Like the red version this wine is a very drinkable package with plenty of concentration wrapped into a very smooth package. Doesn’t come close to the focused intensity and quality offered by Leflaive at this level, or the enjoyment of the Chartron wine above – but it’s a very easy and tasty drink – again not inspiring value for the appellation though.
2002 Girardin Vincent Bourgogne Emotion de Terroirs
Medium-plus cherry red. The nose is mainly cherry, though shaded more to black – no really obvious oak. The palate is very well put together, no hard edges or vices. Tasty with medium concentration, not much tannin and reasonably good acidity. Very smooth and perfectly nice but I was left wanting more for the price if not the appellation
2002 Château Gris Bourgogne Clos de Lupé
2002 Jaffelin Bourgogne Blanc
2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Bourgogne Chardonnay
A medium yellow colour. The nose is quite nice, high-toned, sweet but not too sweet, with a little citrus depth. Open with no hard edges on the palate, there’s nice acidity with enough sweet fruit and a medium finish that has the merest young trace of bitterness. I wouldn’t complain if I ended up with a glass of this in a bar – a worthy house wine for consuming over the next three years and very good value.
2002 Drouhin Joseph Laforet Bourgogne Rouge
2002 Bouvier René Bourgogne Le Chapitre
2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Bourgogne Pinot Noir
A bright, medium ruby-red colour. The nose is a little reticent but there’s faint, sweet cherry with a developing orangey note. The palate doesn’t boast the concentration you’ll find in Bouchard’s Bourgogne Chardonnay, but given the price, this is very good. The finish betrays a little taint – which is a shame – but this is more than almost good for €5 in the French supermarket.
