2008 Bachelet Jean-Claude St.Aubin Derrière la Tour

By billn on September 24, 2011

The nose starts with quite a lot of sweet toasty oak, eventually there’s a higher toned sweetness that’s not particularly oak-based. Given time (totally blind) I could be convinced by the aromas that this a white wine, with a Meursault-style gingerbread note in evidence. In the mouth the first impression is of a rather thin wine but there is quite some intensity welling up. Good acidity with a faintly sweet medium finish. In the end this is a very tasty drop, but also a highly stylised drop of wine that talks of barrels, not of St.Aubin – it could be from anywhere – well not quite anywhere but you get my drift; all of which leaves me disappointed.

2008 Barthod Ghislaine Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes

Similar in colour to the villages, but the nose has more depth and dimension – there is an almost jellied quality to the black and red fruit – very lovely – heavier than the villages but not overweight. In the mouth there is likewise more dimension and impact, but there is no fat or padding to distract – such lovely acidity, and tannin that I had no inclination to search for. Nothing in the slightest ‘facile’ about this ‘Charmes; intensity, some minerality and an overall package that captivates. Bravo!

2008 Boisson Pierre Auxey-Duresses En Reugne

By billn on September 16, 2011

Pale yellow. The nose is high-toned, faintly floral and has a nice energy about it – perhaps a little sherbet but not too much so. In the mouth, acid and intensity are my first thoughts – but it’s a rather invigorating acidity – plenty of energy and fun here. Kept cool, this absolutely the perfect aperitif for now. Wait 12 months and you might be wincing. Lovely today, but don’t delay!

2008 Pillot Paul Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Saint Jean

By billn on August 31, 2011

Medium-plus colour. The nose is deep with a subtle oak toast and dark berries overlaid with some violet notes. Lovely acidity and with it super mid-palate intensity. The flavours are dark and quite long-lasting with a little bitter-chocolate. Very understated tannin – overall this is a very good wine with decent value, selling at only 2/3rds the price of the white version.

2008 Boisset Jean-Claude St.Aubin En Remilly

By billn on August 08, 2011

Medium, medium plus yellow. The nose has wafts of grapefruit and pineapple. Day one this is close to tart but with a fabulous acid intensity, the agrume fruit seems just borderline ripe – me? Day two this is classic 2008 with a slightly tropical edge to the fruit but just wonderful acid balance – it seems a little sweeter. I assume my palate wasn’t playing on day one because this is superb on day 2!

2008 Long-Depaquit Chablis Vaillons

By billn on July 17, 2011

Pungent, fresh and intense – without sight of the label you could be forgiven for being unsure if it were a Grand Cru or not. This wine was singing, so much so that (pouring for three people) it was almost gone in a flash. A little was left in the bottle which was left in the fridge – a full five days later, because of travelling, I returned to the remaining half glass. I expected to be throwing it down the sink; instead it went down my throat with enjoyment – not even a hint of development or oxidation – bravo! And that was without a seal of any kind in the neck.

2008 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune du Château

Sealed with the Diam 10. On first opening there is nothing on the nose save oak-spice, the palate has some density and suggestions of fruit but little else. As the wine aerates and warms there is a short period where the oak and fruit come close to aromatic balance, but afterwards the impression is rather diffuse. Likewise the flavours never offer the focus and intensity that I would hope for and indeed expect. It seems disappointing, yet I’m loathed to discount it – I didn’t like either the 2001 or 2006 at this stage/age yet they improved immeasurably with another 3+ years in bottle – but I don’t think oak was the issue with those wines. Still, to drink today I wouldn’t/couldn’t recommend it. Day 2 and the oak is, if anything, more dominant. I have a couple more to see if I’m (yet again) wrong about this wine.

2008 Bouton Gilles Blagny Sous Le Puits

By billn on June 13, 2011

Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose is super, there’s the cuvée’s signature dark and slightly herby core, but above is a wonderful bloom of of high-toned violets an fresh black cherry. Seems rounder and more concentrated that the 09, just a litlle fat to the texture. A nice little extra dimension of fruit in the mid-palate. Lovely wine!

2008 Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

Floral aromas. The palate has great poise but is really distinguished by its dense, flavourful finish – I’d finish it myself given half the chance.
